There are problems. It's a whole other platform so they can't combine anything or save anything by making "two" versions.
Maybe they are working their asses off behind the curtains to make a new kick-ass platform common to ALL markets. That way, they could use the same components from the japanese color/camera-flip-phones as western gsm/gprs/3g-phones by just using another radio-module and loading different software (or something like that). In that way they their volume would INCREASE which means CHEAPER and BETTER phones which means PROFIT (unless they screw up marketing again).
Japanese people are generally willing to pay more for more advanced gadgets than the rest of the world. So launching wiz-bang japanese technology in the west might never be profitable.

Maybe THAT is what is happening; they are combining things to make a new common platform that allows them to produce gprs flip phones like THOSE.
