It will ask you before doing anything though. It will just say its not formatted and give you the option of re-formatting it.

Best thing to do is backup all the stuff on the iPod on your PC (to DVD or whatever), transfer it to the Mac and set-it up in iTunes as you want, reformat the iPod, and use iTunes on the Mac to sync it all back again.

You convert an iPod formatted for Windows into an iPod for Mac by using the iPod for Mac Software Updater on the Apple website. Note that once it is reformatted, it will only work with Macs, unless you reformat it again.

Here's an Apple tech note on how to reformat:

Do you let iTunes automatically update your iPod when its connected? If so, you should have a complete backup of your iPod in your iTunes library on your PC.

If you manually manage the songs on your iPod (dragging and dropping songs and playlists yourself), then you'll have to use one of the many iPod song transfer utilities on your PC, unless you already have all the music on your iPod backed-up on your PC.

I've never used such a program on a PC so can't recommend any - but here and here are a few for starters you could try.

Hi, it appears that the iTunes Music Library is compatible from Mac to PC and vice versa, but I've never tested it. So, in theory, you should just be able to copy the whole lot in one go.

Also got a question. I have read you can change the mac os icons around, but how do you do this?

also I know I have posted this before, but I need to do it again as I still have problems. when I delete any data from any portable storage device - external hd, memory drives etc - the files are not deleted, you can't see the folders, but still the memory is used, I just checked on my back up hd and there is over 30gb of this mysterious space which i cannot wrte to unless i reformat my hd, which is really bad, as I need the info and have no where to put it. I tired formating the devices, but i still get the problem after ive written to them again.

also on the ideas of back up, I want to mirror my hd every week, but I tired using the program jools suggested, but am having alot of problems, is there a way to do it in disc utility?

cheers luke

1) To change icons, simply Get Info (Apple-I) on the icon you want to use, then click the icon in the info window, and do "Edit > Copy". Then do the same on the other file but paste the icon in the same place.
Loads of nice icons can be downloaded from www.iconfactory.com

2) You are remembering to empty the trash after deleting files?

3) Try Silverkeeper (http://www.lacie.com/silverkeeper/) for automated, scheduled backups, and its free!
