its fun to read threads like these...

i for one love SE's marketing tactics tho theyve been or maybe seemingly following NOKIA's.

these phones especially walkman branded ones has specific market levels. like W900, SE expected it not to sell like pancakes, but its part of the process, the marketing process that it and especially on the technological side. I am not a marketing specialist but looking thru it... SE is really making sense.

theyve just throw this w900 as a bate... targeted a certain market level. for they told that these w900s should be sale-able to those executive types of people. not the usual yuppies. the ones that can shell out more cash for a not-so-technologically advance but experimental phone. well i rest my case since anyone can contest to this.

thats why the release of w810i is like an impromptu since theyve "maybe" estimated the sales or markets for these walkman branded phones. now they have several phones for certain level of markets... all walkman brands... which almost has similar features... all with the same price range. i guess theyve fully calculated and projected these sales for different levels and yes its so very ingenius to over-project.

i guess its really a marketing tactic. like the NOKIA's. remember SE has this trademark of realeasing two models of similar features at a time. the T series, J series. im really not sure, but the this trademark i think was overcomed by the markets reaction to walkman brands. thats why they had to divert onto this trend... hehe..

well anyway its all but just speculations... my 5 cents.

the w810 is just an alternative for people in America because they are always complaining about no 850 and no EDGE. the w800 was out in the US and i guess it had a decent response to it so that why they are rolling out the w810 with all the feactures that North American wants. i live in canada so i know people here always saying they must have 850 in a phone. so now they have one and i think it might do well.

Vanquish re: your post (my win2k machine won't let me quote): "it is a brilliant idea but the walkman mp3 players never really caught on like zen and ipod. maybe se should slow down walkman phones and release some high quality imaging ones or fashion ones like the V3 but bursting with features. "

I think part of the reason the sony walkman mp3 players never caught on is because they weren't MP3 players. They were atrac players with no facility to play non-atrac music. This has changed now, and in the phone walkman, they have dropped atrac altogether. Essentially no-one who wants true protability of their music files would ever be interested in ATRAC. Sony have finally got the message and now support mp3 in their players.

However I fully agree with you about the imaging phones. Actually I do pretty much agree with your original post, but I also think it's because of the wait on UIQ3 - soon we'll get a slew of UIQ3 handsets and people will ask "why did they drop the walkman?" So It's not an issue for me - I think market forces will bring them back into check.

walkman is pretty much SE now..

what you'll proabably see is new SE phones.. that are business style.. that say (walkman inside) with no logo. it's just a media player app and it's here to stay.. but the branding will change based on the market they're appealing too...

i don't think a silver 3.2 w900i... or s900i would have sold much better in all honesty....the phone is too big for most people and too expensive

here's my review.. if you guys want to look

It is not crazy....i don't see a reason why SONYERICSSON cannot help SONY to revitalize a trademark tht is fading away thanks to iPOD.

In fact I think SONYERICSSON have did " one hell of job" on exploiting "WALKMAN"
