I don't think it will ever have ...
Unless the manufacturers decide to build it in.
The reason, I have red this somewhere but don't remember where, is that MS doesn't like because this tech means that the computer will no longer be at the center of the home electronics. It makes sense to me on the short term. If devices can sync without problems and many standards can co-exist (I can sync my phone with my palm and so on) Windows will no longer be the center of electronics.
The theory however does not convince me that much...
There still is one reason that makes more sense to me...
MS created this phone in strong partnership with an operator (Orange) and is a technology that allows to play games and share documents without using the network... So I guess they want to please the carriers.

If someone has a better explanation it is welcome.
One thing I am also waiting for is for Apple to release a PDA phone, I know it is in their plans.
All those things will happen really soon...

But I don't expect MS smartphones to have as part of their standard features in the near future.

I also think that someone mentioned a really intersting point. , since the joint venture was created, tend to use no standards... Look at the memory stick duo and the expensive SDK.
Ericsson invented but everyone can use it... Sony invented MiniDisc, MemoryStick and now MemoryStick Duo and does not license them. This slows those standards acceptance dramatically down.
Nokia is doing the same mistake.

Microsoft has unterstood (maybe because of previous negative experiences) that, in order to lead the market, they have to tease carriers... To make products appealing.
Now I make a guess... Microsoft invests a lot of money to produce a smartphone EXACTLY how Orange wants, with all the features (I am not talking about this phone but a future one) and the options Orange wants. And then Microsoft will put shortcuts to its own product sites, sell Server Software and all other kinds of software to Orange in order to enhance the phones... Think about updates of the phone SW through GPRS (or 3G), with whose software will this be made possible?

Both parties win. That is the difference between this deal and other deals between carriers and manufacturers.

I think the point is right about SE taking their time on releasing a product. This is how they loose out on a big market share (it does not take a man in a white coat to work that out) Look at Nokia and Siemens etc. No messing around in their departments. SE is going to have to pull up their socks with onset of MS in the mobile market. Who don't waste time.

Questions

1, The SPV will it work with my Vodafone pay as you go card.

2, Is the SPV a smart phone or a 3G phone!!!


P.S

I was thinking about spending my money on the P800, but after all the pissing about with the release dates I think I might have to go for the SPV.

I have to dispute you on that. Everything in their phones, except maybe the duo-stick-thing, are open-standards-compliant. As I understand it, SE has the best support for syncing technologies, browser compliance, and bluetooth support. There is even a version of GCC for mophun. That is further in terms of "freedom" than any other phone-maker has gone.

The UIQ SDK as such is free of charge. To use it to develop native C++ symbian applications you need the IDE, which is not an SE-product. Do you understand this?

Your argument does not hold.

And btw, at the moment it does not matter so much that they use memstick instead of anything else. Memory-technology market is still changing.

Nokia does everything but comply to standards; in a way that is one of their strategic strengths. Look at their picture-messaging for example.

I would not trust you to decide whether such decisions are mistakes or not.

Ehm, that is not a matter of inventing technology. It is just not safe to do that. That is why you have to take it to a service point.

I have a Nokia "mediabox" or whatever they call it. It is hooked up via a satellite dish and it is supposed to be able to update its own firmware. Now, after a number of update-attemps, it is impossible to start it without it rebooting within 10 seconds. The leds show "self-test" and after the second boot it starts functioning again.

Did you think of what happens if your battery fails half through an update?

Actually, Microsoft's strengths are their familiar GUI-look-and-feel, compliance with their own technologies and possibility to adapt their own non-standard-proprietary-monopoly products to their non-standard-proprietary-wannabe-monopoly-smartphone software.

That is the great advantage with a proprietary technology-monopoly; you can do whatever you want and people are obligated to buy it.

I also think this and their subsequent phones are heavily subsidised by Microsoft (similarly to xbox). Microsoft does not make their big bucks by selling the smartphone-software itself; but by using it as a platform to leverage content and applications that you have to pay for. You can think of it as a "pay to be robbed"-kind of deal.

Business managers will feel they can not afford their employees not using smartphone, since it would give them access to the "corporate network" at any time. This would all be packaged into a nice deal delivered by the operator. And it will be called a "Business Solution".

It's all bullshit of course, but it doesn't matter. Worried managers without know-how make dangerous decisions. Just look at the success of MS windows/office.

If you treasure your freedom, folks, whatever you - stay away from phones with Microsoft in them.

Well hopefully my search is over! I have to update my contract late November and currently own a Gold T68mi on the O2 network. Having looked at what is coming out and what is out I haven't really been that impressed and was prob gona get a freebie and sell it on. But now I think I may get the SPV it may not have BT but it has a cradle to sync with ur PC, it comes with a camera too. All for the reasonable sum of £179.99! The same price I bought my T68m for!!!

Anyone interested in my phone and MSI BT dongle all for £135. I may not sell yet but am open minded.

The SPVwill be out here in the UK on November 11th. Vodafone Live starts on Friday (25th).
