Any decent 'G' router should also accept 'b' clients. My Linksys WRT54GS certainly does.
Peter, I even downloaded the manual for your router from the Chinese website and I couldn't see any mention of 'mixed' mode. (okay I was bored last night!). I assume it's default setting is mixed (b/g) mode.
Can you connect to any router? There must be loads of available wireless networks these days.
Sorry I can't be more help, I don't even have a P990 (yet)!

will need to find another person with wifi, or pop into my local BBC radio that has wifi.

at my school they have a locked network, so i set up all the proxy stuff etc, but it needs a network key/password but i cant see anywehere to enter this nor does it ask for it and i think this isi why it isnt working.
can you help?
it works fine at home on my unlocked network by the way.

Okay, everyone. The wifi chip on the p990 (both versions) is a 802.11b.
802.11 is the Wifi standard and a, b and g are all versions of it.
802.11b was the first to be widely distributed and is limited to 11Mbps. It also has a shorter range than a and g versions of the standard.
You always connect to an access point, not a router. If your router has an access point built in, lucky you.
Most routers will have a mixed mode, use this as it will allow you to use your P990 and also use your laptop in g mode which is 5x faster and has greater range.
The way to conect to any access point (router) is as follows:
You need:
SSID - This is the name of the wireless network. Sometimes it is hidden, this means that the access point does not broadcast the name of the network to make it harder to hack into. If this is the case you need to go to another computer on the wireless network and look for the wireless connection symbol in the taskbar. Right click on this and click status. The SSID is under Network.
Encryption Key - This is the "password" to the network, you need it to decrypt the information coming from the router and to encrypt information you send the access point. There are lots of different encryption standards.
The P990 supports WEP, 802.1x, WPA and WPA - PSK. Unless you understand these, it is best to avoid them. The offer higher levels of protection, sometimes with decreased performance. Trust me when I say that you needn't bother. Unless you're the CIA or MI6.
Access Points use WEP by default. WEP comes in two flavours, Open and Shared. Open is the default.

1 - Open the Wireless LAN on the P990.
2 - Click Scan.
3 - If your SSID comes up, click it, when prompted to set up an account, click "Yes". If your SSID doesn't come up, it's probably hidden. Click the WLAN text at the top of the screen, click "New Account".
A window will come up with WLAN setup along the top.
4 - Enter a name for the Account under "Account Name:". This should be the name by which you know the connection. SOmething along the lines of "Office" "Home" or "20 Bodge Street", hell even "Starbucks".
5 - Enter the SSID under "Network name (SSID):".
6 - Under "Authentication:" enter Open. (This is the default on almost all access points). If you know what you're doing, enter the appropriate standard. I suggest WPA - PSK as a more secure but still practical option for the home if you deal with sensitive data from the office (WPA - PSK requires changes to the router settings and unless you have a wired connection to your router, do not change the settings! you could find yourself locked out).
7 - Under "Network mode", enter Infrastructure. (If you want to connect to another computer without a router, enter Ad hoc. THis requires another computer running in Ad hoc mode).
8 - Press the next arrow, it looks like a play button on a dvd player.
9 - Under "Data Encryption" enter WEP.
10 - Press the next key.
11 - Under "Default WEP key:" choose 1.
12 - Under "Define WEP key:" choose #1.
13 - Under "WEP key type" enter either Hex for Hexadecimal or ASCII for normal text. If you don't know which it is, look at the encryption key, if it has numbers and the letters a-f, it is probably Hex. If your encryption key has numbers, symbols and all the letters, it is ASCII.
14 - Under "WEP key:" enter the WEP key.
15 - Press the next key.
16 - Press Save.
17 - When prompted to add it to a group account, add it to your preferred account. Probably Internet.
18 - Now go to the main menu, click tools, control panel, connections, internet accounts.
19 - Click the Groups Tab.
20 - Click on your preferred group, probably Internet.
21 - Click on the WLAN you just set up. Be it "Home" or whatever you chose.
22 - Set the priority to 1.
23 - Click Done, Save, Done. Surf away to your hearts content.

Same problem as the rest. I can connect to my Airport but once I get to surfing the web, it gives an error message "can not find remote server."

I'm still waiting for the P990, but I've just upgraded my broadband to a wireless router. I 've just ordered the "BT Home Hub"; has anyone succeeded in connecting to one of these?

With regards to your enquiry, please try the following:
On your P990i
1. Open the flip, tap Main Menu -> Tools -> Control Panel -> Connections -> WLAN -> Tap the WLAN drop down across the top.
2. Tick Enable, then tap Scan.
3. Once the P990i has found the wireless network, tap the network to select it, and then tap the icon that looks like two arrows pointing into each other to connect to it.
4. A message will popup asking you if you wish to create a new account, select yes.
5. When the setup window opens, fill in the following fields:
-Account Name: Enter a any name you like
-Network Name (SSID): Leave this as it is
-Authentication: Select the type of authentication you use on your network. Open or Shared
-Network Mode: Ensure that Infrastructure is selected
On the next screen, leave everything except for WEP KEY. Enter the passkey here.
6. Once the above has been selected, and relevant info entered. Press the arrow again, and save it.
Now we need to add the Wireless account to the internet group.
1. Go back to the Connections menu, then into Internet Accounts.
2. Tap the Groups tab across the top, then tap Internet
3. If your wireless account is not listed, tap Add New Account, and select the wireless connection you have just created.
4. We need to ensure the wireless connection is the first to be used when trying to access the internet, to do this tap the wireless account, and set it to Priority 1, then tap save.
You should now be setup for wireless internet access. If you experience any issue please call 08705 237 237.
