@vwbeetle this is off topic but i would just want to clarify and give you some facts.. quoted from your post
btw i also read how some people were able to convert the data cable readily available locally to a flash cable by altering some pins. i think someone here even builds and sells those flash cables locally
Either you've misread or the info you gathered was inaccurate kaya for your and everyone's info, the ericsson compatible cables locally available are actually originally configured for
Flashing and/or sometimes referred by some as
service cables. These are generic non OEMs and are the same cables which, after modification, becomes configured to a
Data and/or sometimes referred by some as
Modem cable. After mods have been made, said cable can now be used for whatever purpose the OEM DRS-10/11 is capable of.
Without said conversion or altering of pins, you can readily use that cable (in conjunction with an appropriate flash file) to
Flash upgrade or downgrade a T39, R520, T68, R600, etc firmware.
Going back to the topic, I share your sentiments that SE Phils should support software upgrades for the mc models. UNLESS they say that these mc series are substandard or are made up of cheaper components, thus justifying its price difference as compared to the T68Ms or Is (which i doubt), I feel the main reason for SE Phils non-support is a threat from a major distributor here in the Phils that they would pullout the SE line of phones from their product lineup (oo nga protectionism) if and when they allow other service points to upgrade or repair flash the cheaper mc models.
@* Correct me if I'm wrong but I honestly believe that mc, m, ie, and i all have almost the same hardware and their components are backward compatible with each other.
I believe its all in the firmware
@arnoldc quoting your post
first, unlike nokia or siemens phones, ericsson/sonyericsson use a centralized server called EMMA where service providers connect to, to perform software upgrades/updates
Do you mean each and every firmware upgrade/update they have to log-in and connect to their EMMA? and that they don't have a stored flash file that they can use if and when an EMMA connection isnt possible?

yup, iisa lang naman daw talaga hardware nila kaya lahat ng SW pwede... ayaw lang talaga ng SE service points dito sa pinas... that sucks. but i dont mind R2E coz its very stable.
