I've found the same unreliability of 3.5mm headphones - this has been a problem since the first cassette walkmans.
3.5mm headphones port would be useful no denying it, but as you say, fastport is far more reliable and probably we are better off with fastport. It's a hard judgement call. If looked after, a 3.5mm socket can last a long time (just have to be careful to never laterally flex the 3.5mm jack), and they could design it with a cover to protect the phone innards.

If u ask me,3.5 connectors are more tolerant to dust, dirt, moisture etc than fastport.
Ive always had problems with my fast port with dust/dirt..

3.5 mm connector might be prone, but not rest of the phone....

True, but the 3.5mm is more prone to physical damage, whereas the fastport is prone to getting dirt on it but is almost immune to physical damage. You can always clean a fastport when it gets clogged up, easily, whereas a damaged 3.5mm socket is the end of using listening to music via headset. For me that would be the end of the phone's useful life

The fastport doesn't "break".

The fastport is actually a very damage resistant connector, but you have to keep it clean if you want good performance. Simple as that.
I'm afraid I do not quite agree. It's true that it's very damage resistant, and compared to a 3.5 mm jack it's very unlikely that the phone gets damaged if the cable is pulled out in a unfortunate direction, and it's also true that cleaning of the contacts does help in many cases, but the fastport connector actually DOES break sometimes. It's a pure mecanical issue. The plastic springs that are supposed to hold the plug in place tends to become too weak, or it may be the sockets they are suppoed to hatch into in the phone's fastport socket that becomes worn out after a while, and the result is that the fastport plug pops out of its position almost by itself, or by very little external force. I have seen this on many
phones with the fastport connector.
The design of a phone connector is not a very easy task however. To begin with, you want many connectors in order to be able to support many functions, like power iintake, speaker output, mic input, signalling and communication with accessories, etc, you want a robust connector that does not fall off by itself, but you also want a connector that actually does dieconnect and does not damage either the phone or the plug or the cable if exposed to accidental force. There are several solutions to this problem, but none of them are perfect. Nokia uses a separate connector for the charger, Motorola uses mini-USB (and thus serial communication to reduce the number of connectors), etc. An upcoming extra requirement is compatibility with other brands for accessories that can be connected to the phone.

I'll take your word for it, but I've never seen such fastport damage myself. I would expect it would involve undue care to cause such damage, not normal everyday use.

I would really like to spend a day with all you people that say that because the handsfree brakes is for being uncarefull. And for the love of god its no the fastport itself its the handsfree that brakes cause the fastport itself is a useless piece of crap unless your like some of these guys in here that probleby sit on their chair at a office space, unlike me and all the people i know that uses s.e phones and handsfree. There is no other place to put the mobile then in your pocket. Im not buying a new phone so I can put it in a pocket fasten to my belt cause then i could change my name to steve urkel!
I've been using SE phones for a long time and have had problems with their handsfree all the time. I have to buy a new one every 3-4 months and no its not because they are dirty cause as soon as i connect the new one everything works fine!

I have never had any problems with a 3.5mm jack connection. Its strong, small and reliable. I have many different kinds of problems with fastport. The contacts lose their spring, dust, the connection becomes loose over time. Then stupid decision such as making the connector big and put it on the side. I would always choose 3.5mm over fastport, eventually so will SE.

Read my post mate. I have found the exact same thing occasionally as you say (but not every three months) - a handsfree that stops working on my phone, a new one works fine, BUT if I clean the fast port then the old one works fine also. I gave my reasoning as to why this might happen, maybe you are too impatient to read other people's posts.
Nevertheless, if you keep it clean then old handsfree's will work again. If you don't want to be bothered cleaning it then fine suit yourself. No matter what you say about yourself being a snotty nosed kid who doesn't have enough balls to wear his phone on his belt (btw I don't sit in an office all day) the fact is there are many satisfied fastport customers who don't have problems so try as I might I'm hard pressed to understand how you can have so many problems with headsets that you have to replace them every 3 months. If you want to carry your phone in your pocket that's your choice. I carry mine in my pocket sometimes too, and it's never been a problem for me.
Seriously I've never heard ANYONE with the same extent of problems as you, so I find it very hard to believe all the others are wrong and you alone are right.

Buy a Nokia. Since
is for office ppl..
BTW. I work on industrial site and I do not have any problems whatsoever with fastport. But I do have with the hole of 3.5 mm. That is one of the main reasons why I do not have Nokia.
So, if you buy Nokia, you will not be frustrated with the phone and in return your life will be more joyfull.
