Thanks guys some interesting discussion there...
I'm not looking to buy immediately
so am happy to wait for iPhone4 real life reviews and possible updates to come out for X10 etc
I don't use facebook - or anything like that. Communication mostly on 3p texts with T-Mobile PAYG 'text appeal'
So I WON'T be getting one on contract LOL
I like the media functions, camera, usage for alarms, internet etc - I was really impressed by the HTC Desire using I think it was google street view - where you can move the phone around and it shows the 'street view' in the place and direction you are looking - I love stuff like that

I sold my x10 and bought myself a Desire and do not regret it. In fact I find it much better. Better screen,UI,multitouch,2.1,faster etc. My daughter has ordered one and now my wife wants to sell her x10 and get one herself

if screen was the only comparison then I'm sorry to disagree in that I have experience that the X10 screen is better in most conditons than the desire
the UI (sense) and O/S do also make the Desire more, ahem, desirable

Loving my X10
haven't had any major lag, yes there is a slight lag when opening App manager but very slight and also when opening really large high quality games but other than that no lags, its a speed deamon! Faster than my mum's 3GS which I updated to iOS4 yesterday.
I'm also happy with 1.6 I don't feel any limitation when gettig apps in the Market, i'd like 2.1 but I'm happy with how the X10 is.
Battery life is getting better, but saying an iPhone has better battery life is just a joke I'm sure
as that DEFINETLY ain't true.

I'm typing this on a desire...it has the same lag when opening the app manager. As does the htc tattoo, samsung galaxy spica and x10 mini - ell, the ones I used, anyways. Actually, I every regard but the desire's more accurate keyboard I do prefer my HD2 - almost as fast, but loads more freedom than Android or iOs
I'm now waiting on an X10 to see if I can be convinced by it... I loved the review x10 mini I had, so who knows...
I'm underwhelmed by the desire's battery life tbh. HD2 has to support the 4'3'' screen and a more bloated OS, and yet its battery lasts way longer than the Desire's...

@bonovox
Agree, camera is very good (I already had an X10, but o2 ireland had fw-branded it to beyond usability - it was slower than my n97
I hope the new x10 I'm getting is less crippled)
