@ gzumba: in theory, the gprs is so much faster than CSD (max 115 kbps/sec versus max 14,4 kbps/sec) but i guess the operators realised that nobody needs 115kbps so they r using just a little bandwidth just enough to satisfy the few customers they have and offering just 3kbps/sec ...on wap u don't need more. On internet surfing however, i got around 28,8 kbps/sec (but they were REAL) and that's a bit faster ,right?
I think it's all about the kind of service (gprs technology is cheaper and more reliable than csd) and it has more potential but as we can see, no1 rushes on developing or to get better.Let's face it!ONly a few ppl use gprs..

On Orange UK you can get the full 114Kb/s by subscribing to HSSCD (High Speed Switch Circuit Data) or something like that, but its expensive!!!

HSCSD is older than GPRS and u can't achieve 115 kbps/sec but around 80 kbps and yes, it is more expensive and not so many phones have this standard. But hell, who needs 15 kbps? Not me!:)

@ 701 that makes sense. I guess usa internet account users clock a higher speed or they wouldn't cough up the bigger bucks. But i can't help feeling that they are lying to us when they talk about speed as a selling point for GPRS. I mostly use free CSD because it is not any slower. I would use GPRS more if it were faster. @gzumba For a real speed test you'd really need to transmit a good sized data packet as has been pointed out small data packets aren't the best measure.

Users of the wireless data cards and those that use their phones as modems most certainly see higher speeds that 9.6k (TM USA CSD top speed).

I haven't seen any ads that claim that TM USA has the faster/best data network in the world. In fact I haven't even seen ads for their data network other than sending pictures with camera phones.

@ krazyk T-Mobile prides itself on having the latest generation first. Much of their literature boasts about the speed of their GPRS. Forget the tests: CSD not any slower in any application, even with large files. In fact, even paying connect time per minute would still be cheaper than GPRS. In theory it is obvious the GPRS is better.But in reality, all operators use little bandwidth to satisfy us 4 wap only ( mine works fine at night, in the morning until 12 am and that's it) and some internet (but damn expensive so.....i hate their plans.U know what? It won't work cuz only a few ppl use gprs and even less use wap. So, one way or another they had to change their minds - u can see a 1st step with Orange offering unlimited wap-over-gprs for a cheap 4$ (or 4pounds in the uk) and smaller charges on gprs internet. There will be others as they won't collect much with these plans too: -) Hoping: -P

Aw got 2,83 Kbp/s. but when downloading games of 40 KB i am finished in 3 to 5 seconds... so maybe, there is something WRONG with this test!
