It is 12 years since I had my last education in German, but I belive that schadenfroh is the adjective and Schadenfreude is the noun. So (if I am right) you were not so wrong anyway.
In Norwegian the word translates directly to skadefryd. 95% chance for it being similar in Danish and Swedish (skadfröjd?). The word is a loan from German or Low-German.
In Icelandic it is meinfýsni.
The Norwegian-English dictionary translates it to malicious pleasure, malice.
