My question "How much of SE's resources would it have taken to make the new phones (k750 &w800) edge ready" is still unanswered. Today, the condition is, i can't recommend a person to buy an Se phone because i know he won't be getting value for his money.(a problem which can be fixed by giving him edge compatibility) Also, you've got to understand why Edge is so important here. Getting an internet connection through gprs is the cheapest and fastest way to enter the www here. (Damn the word limit!

first of all that map by goldenface is not entirely correct we have edge networks in many parts of Africa as well .so this means almost all world has edge networks except Europe.So if SE are not going to release new edge sets or international versions of already existing sets like s710i or k500i than I doubt whether they would be able to maintain their 5th place in global market.

For a more up to date map please contact the GSM Association. The point is why waste time and money putting EDGE in handset where they will sell in handfuls?
@psychomantis. BTW the green is only where it has been TRIALLED.

My view is that they donīt introduce more EDGE or UMTS phones because this technologies arenīt mainstream yet!!!! People just donīt need them/use them in large scale
Itīs easy to see this: even MMS didnīt reach mass accpetance yet!!! The same goes to wap browsing!!!! And please donīt go talking about you, your friends, people here at esato and other phorums - thatīs not the masses...
Of course, thereīs an explanation for this - the outrageous price of data we pay to the operators - this a big obstacle to mms, wap, gprs, edge, umts, whatever...
On other hand, camera phones obtained what the other techonologies didnīt...itīs tremendously popular!!! Sales of camera phones are now almost over digital camera sales!!
The same will happen with the next wave - music phones IMHO
So, what is SE doing??? Itīs focusing itīs business in photos and in music...itīs has simple has that...i donīt think theyīre wrong, although my mobile phone nerd mind (as yours) would like to see all the top features in all SE phones right now

if edge is that important and i can see it is to some people which is fair enough go and give your money to a company that wants it why worry about se you dont get any money off them for selling phones via word of mouth.
if se aint interested in you then why be interested in them

@Arez. Exactly

SE is just using its resources wisely.
However, if operators demanded more EDGE phones then SE would supply them. But they aren't.
@Whizzkid. How much do you pay for data charges?

Then i'd say SE did a blunder by releasing only two edge enabled phones. All these huge amount of money for only two phones!? Also, you've got to remember that anyway, the k750 and the likes are mid category phones that won't sell much in markets like india. So why launch them here anyway?

why would operators bother to ask a company which is not even intersested in making edge sets for more edges sets rather they would have contract with leading edge phone makers like Nokia a thing which Hutch has done in India

I don't doubt that EDGE is important in India, but India isn't as important to SE as either Europe or Japan. I don't think SE would willingly pass up any market, but they have to be practical about the limits of their capabilities.
