Yeah, those tips (well, suggested applications) from M$ will work to an extent, but none of them will put the machine back to exactly as it was when it was a clean install because it's practically impossible to completely clear out the registry. Even if you make a system restore point when the machine is totally fresh and use that to take it back, there's still going to be loads of bits and bobs floating about.
I really think the best way is to just re-partition, re-format and re-install the OS. Or 'Blatting', as it's affectionately known!
Just make sure that you can get all the drivers again before you go blatting, in fact if you're doing this at home it's best to identify, download them and burn them to a CD first. If that's not possible, then make sure that you have a driver disk for your dial-up / DSL modem so that you can get the PC back on the net straight away.

i tried ubuntu. i burned the iso the correct way, but it told me there was an error... anyone know any other good free versions? and what are your expreiences?
