Ok...this is just weird....

I just called O2 Customer Services...even though i had the story from O2 retail, just wanted to see what they had to say....

They have no record of a withdrawl from sale, no record of technical faults and no record of any recall and their sales teams are still selling the handset (albeit with a 3 week delivery date which reading between the lines explains a lot)

So O2 retail have sent them all back to O2 but O2 don't know anything about a fault....What a company

I guess i'm sticking with Plan A: Wait for Retail store to inform me they have a revised replacement for me.

But don't bother calling 08702410202 as they won't have the slightest clue!

obviously something fishy is going on...! they have no stock for another 2 weeks? I think SE must be putting new FW on the latest K750s...

mine has crashed twice and although i'm not too bothered, I hope that if new FW is put on the newer phones, that those of us who received our K750s when they first came out get the option of either replacing them with the latest or updating via the online updater.

OMG - there is nothing fishy whatsoever. All this hearsay is really starting to do my box in.

This is the internal email from o2, I hope it explains the situation and shuts all you scaremongers up:

Quote:Sony Ericsson K750I

A fault has been identified on the Sony Ericsson K750I that manifests itself in the form of a freezing screen.

The fault is not apparent in all K750I handsets, only in some.

A fix is being worked on by Sony Ericsson and new stock will be available for testing later this week.

If the new stock tests OK we expect the delivery of the new stock be be week commencing 20/06/05.

Where customers are experiencing this problem, removing the battery and replacing it may correct the problem.

However customers that require a replacement should be advised that replacement stock will not be available until week commencing 20/06/05 therefore they can either hold onto their K750I until then or be offered an alternative/refund.

Well, if only some parts of the memory are corrupted, it can explain why some would have no problem while others may have major problems! And it doesn't mean it's hardware problem, it can be solved with a new firmware!

Let me tell you something that may help you understand: I'm an electronics engineer, and a few years back I had some C++ programming courses, and when we had made some errors with "pointers", the program would compile, but it would run on some computers and would give an error on other ones! It's because the pointers were not correctly initialized and were reading parts of the memory they shouldn't have, and if by luck there was no problematic data in that area of the memory, then the program would still run despite being corrupted...

So it's really possible that it's a firmware problem and not something more problematic!

Ahhh good old pointers. I used to develop enterprise class C applications a few years ago (I am a software developer) and memory overwrites and pointer problems used to be a nightmare to solve - many a late night was spent trying to pinpoint why an app was falling over on Solaris and not on the more tolerant HP-UX.
My point however still stands that I think its a hardware problem and not software - I'm not saying that most of the problems can't be worked around with firmware but if it is hardware the only way to really fix it is to replace the phone, which it sounds like O2 are going to be doing.

O2 online said to me that no more k750s will be sold till the 20th when a new batch will be in, and that you can return your handset for exchange or wait, that simple, speculation on firmware or hardware being to blame could rage forever if your not sure email SE or ask o2 but as has been mentioned before some customer support staff may not be properly informed
