This is the funniest thread I've read in ages!!
Anyone on here old enough to remember the code that enabled EFR (Enhanced Full Rate) that was passed on as a way of getting free calls? Obviously everyone who passed it on knew a mate that hadn't been charged for calls for months...
Crazy!
And, for what it's worth, if you enter **# then instead of getting one extra bar, it fixes the phone to maximum signal at all times. In fact, it even makes the phone work in tunnels, under the sea or on trips to the International Space Station.

I have just tested **# here on the International Space station and can confirm that it does work! I am going to forward that code onto my friend on Mars as he keeps complaing about the GSM reception there.

No the Uranus authorities have banned the usage of # (read: hash) on the planet due to certain reasons well known on earth too. Therefore, you are out of luck.

No No this **# code really works !! Atleast on GSM phones.. I just entered it, switched off and removed the SIM. Infact upon switching on, I found ALL the SIM Data was saved on handset.. Without SIM its showing full Signal and I even got a call from JCWhite saying he may 'drop in' on Earth next weekend !

The explanation for this is pretty simple. I've used this trick for years, but i use a different code, *555# which is the code to check my balance on my network. The trick can be used on any network and my guess is using a code that works on ur network. What a code usually does is request info from the operator. This sends a signal to the operator, and the operator will try to send you back the requested info. Now if you are in a low network area, this will give you a signal boost since the operator is trying to send you info.

wont it be something to do with refreshing your signal? i.e your signal goes static but when you request something it updates the display?
