Ok it seems that it's going to be K850i vs W960i for

But which do you think will come out on top?

Does the functionality of touch screen reduce over the years??? and if it reduces what can be the solution to it???

I've not had a phone for years, so I can't really answer that one.

I think that the W960 screen will be better than previous ones because dust and grit can't get in where the screen meets the side of the case.

Haven't seen a post from you for quite a while, hopefully you're still around.

Since you got to play around with the W960i, can you let me know if the 3 soft keys can be pressed not by pressing right on them on screen, but by pressing slightly below (ie. where the 3 Walkman functions play/pause, prev and next are) ? This would mean that that part of the phone is permanently touch-sensitive (not only when Walkman is on) and that would avoid a lot of smudge on the screen.

I'd love to know about that (sorry if it doesn't look like such a big deal to most people !!)

Hi,

Not been on the boards for a bit, just saw your post.

I've just got a new prototype which has a few small improvements. I'll have a check and let you know.

I do think that the audio controls are linked with the keyboard and not the touch screen though.

EDIT: No, you have to touch the screen. The phone is a finger print magnet anyway, so you'll soon forget about things like that.

Hey Jimster,
Thought of another unrelated question after I hit REPLY -- does SE make you put that disclaimer in your posts if you want to be on a forum?

Wondering if you're able to outline any changes in this new prototype? I'm interested in the development/testing stages of these devices, on the hardware AND software side. What is your job exactly? Do you test units, like QA?

Also, wondering if you can give some insight into the functionality of the MUSIC keys that were just discussed. First off, it does seem that these areas of the unit ARE touch-sensitive; are you saying that these 'keys' (the music icons) are ONLY visual indicators of a CHANGE in functionality of the bottom 3 on-screen keys? This would make little sense to me as you would lose those three functions, which would mean you could no longer perform a lot of music-related functions, go into settings, etc. Can you please clarify on this?

Additionally, in watching some live videos of this phone in action, if those music icons ARE actually KEYS, it seems they only function at certain times. When you are INSIDE the walkman player, and music is playing, they seem to light up. If you pause, or minimize the app, the icons go away. If you minimize while playing music, the icons again GO AWAY -- this seems illogical, as you then lose your most important quick-access music controls (since there are no STATIC, HARDWARE-BASED music buttons). If you are on the main screen, and scroll to select the walkman desktop widget, the icons come back. Once you scroll off, they go away.
It would be nice if whenever music is playing, regardless of where you are in the UI or what you're doing, these icons are lit and ACTIVE. They de-activate when you exit the walkman UI and dont have music playing in the background. --- Maybe suggest this to the product development and design team?

Also... what's the good word within SE about release of this phone? Has it still not been released to manufacturing?

one more thing which is boggling me so much is.. the memory which is inbuilt..

In view of performance, its always better for a phone to have an extendable meomry. But this one doesnt. The whole lot of memory is inbuilt..

Wont this be a concern in the phones performance in terms of speed and functioning without hanging..??

i dont really think this is a relevant concern.
the storage ram is likely completely separate from the system's operating system-allocated RAM.
If anything, internal RAM may be FASTER than storage card because your 'weakest link' in the 'speed chain' may not be dependant on memory card I/O speed... the RAM being built into the board is then only limited by the actual speed of the RAM chip and the method of interconnecting this storage RAM with the rest of the system. However then either storage card or built in RAM may ALSO be limited by another interconnect -- USB. If USB is slower than the theoretical speed of the RAM, then USB is holding you back to as fast as it can keep up, and no faster.

Interesting, huh?

Thanks Jimster! Is it glass? Or hard plastic? So I'm guessing it works via a capacitive system rather than the P1 resistive touchscreen?

I'm still undecided between the P1 and the W960... so far the W960 is still in the lead, but with the new 8GB M2 cards, the P1 is closing in... specially since the P1 has a much lower price tag than I expected... and it's getting cheaper as I wait for the launch of the W960...

Only time will tell...

Exactly the point i was raising. It would be great if those 3 keys could be used at all times, as there is no dedicated hardware music player button (despite what the white pages say, but i think they're a copy/paste from the W950i).

I always carry the phone in my pocket and the absence of a hardware button makes the whole Walkman experience much less enjoyable... imagine having to pull out the phone every time you want to pause or switch songs (though for the latter, hopefully a long press on the volume keys will do it...)

Apparently, for all common functions where the 3 soft keys appear, you have to press on the screen itself rather than on the Walkman touch-sensitive keys, which is a shame, as it smudges the screen unnecessarily (why not make the best of those 3 keys??). This is just a software issue, as the 3 keys are already physically, so it's just a matter of re-programming them and it would add a little plus to the UI.

Is it utopic to expect this in the retail version of the phone ?

Isn't the "W" in the keypad a hardware music button?
