Yeah that would be a lot better. I'd even use it on my prepay plan at that price.

Hopefully you get a reply. Vodafone still haven't replied to my email. I'm thinking I'll have to email them again soon!

Yeah, thats the point, data that is usable. Trouble is, they admitted recently that part of thier high data pricing was to avoid thier network being swamped by demand. Things have improved though and customers will no longer stand for pricing like we currently have with 2 more GSM networks on the way.

As it was just a suggestion I did not request a reply. I wasn't impressed with the tone of the last reply anyway...

The tone used by any large corporate body towards the requests of a single customer lol

The New Zealand public still has a long way to go from the "We won't use anything but Telecom because they have always been our provider" mentality, which makes the prospect of 2 new cellular networks almost laughable...

See I was of the impression that new legislation was to be introduced to cut the inter-network charges for calls and data sharing which is crippling the development of the kind of plans you are talking about (Already commonplace in many of our neighbour's networks) and make possible (Affordably) national roaming free of landlines and hardwired broadband connections...

I guess we'll have to wait for the government to harden up...?

I just had a look on the Voda site. Am I right in saying that Voda still dont offer a sim only pay monthly connection? In there sense that there is no contract term? I mean, how can you go on a contract when you provide your own phone? Useless insecure b*stards. Im gonna have to resort to extortionate Prepay rates when I get back? Might have to get a parttime job there just to get a staff tariff.

Errr... no, thats incorrect.
Both Motormouth and You Choose can be had with out a fixed term. They'll try to discourage you from joining thier old Motormouth plan but just ignore that if it's what you want. You Choose base plans are not that cheap but adding Bestmates gives you unlimited Voice/Video calling and Txt/PXT which does represent good value. If you opt for a 12/24/36 month term, Vodafone will offer you either a discount on a handset or extra minutes on your base plan.

I don't think much of the 24 month Talker and Txter plans but the Mega plan is very good (my wife is on it) and only has a 12 month term.

You could sign up to a iPhone 3G plan, keep the plan and sell the iPhone which on TradeMe would fetch a small fortune and offset the (probably 2yr) fixed term.

I just realised why Christchurch's service seems so crap compared to what you're getting up in Auckland:

Thats thier landline network. It's upgraded to 24Mbps via ADSL2+ thanks to Local Loop Unbundling. Telecom and Orcon also supply ADSL2+ to some areas in Auckland. Northland will be getting a 1Gbps Pure Fibre Optic based network in the near future.

Well it just goes to show what Vodafone considers to be important. They haven't even started rolling that out in other cities yet. Obviously Auckland is getting all the attention, and I bet that goes for other products than their landline service.

"Vodafone chief executive Russell Stanners said the company had already unbundled over half of Auckland's exchanges, and would have completed all 41 by the end of the October.

The network, expected to run at a maximum download pace of 24Mbps, would then be extended outside Auckland.

"Based on the market today, we'd look at Hamilton, Tauranga, Palmerston North, Rotorua and Taupo, and of course Wellington," he said.

Christchurch and Dunedin would come later."
