How can it be faster without more time slots?
Thought i'd butt in and explain something here. Edge or egprs uses a different technology then gprs and is based on what is known as 8PSK(8 phase key shifting), basically in essence its a hardware modification in both phone as well as network transmitor's now allowing each cycle to carry 3bits of info opposed to one in gprs which explains it being 3 times faster.
Coming to your earlier discussion comparing class10 and class8 its basically that a child in class10 is most probably bigger, older and more mature Lol on a more serious note, class8 gprs is fixed at 4d+1u slots while class10 is more active and can take 4d+1u OR 3d+2u. As you can see when you need to send a lot of data(upload, email, sms etc) class10 will be twice as fast.

EDGE = Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution

GSM use circuit switching

GPRS uses packet switching for net and circuit for voice

EDGE too uses packet switching.

GPRS allows upto 14kbps in one slot ( there r 8 slots and hence 8*14 = 115kbps appox). but the slots are shared b/w users in gprs.

EDGE combines thes cells (time slots) to achieve faster data rates

posted frm an AMD machine connected to airtel office on a P910i. current b/w 7.4KBps

no no no . something wrong somewher !

did one test with nokia 6670 connected via cable . net speed was 46kbps.

me busy now. doing more tests. damn , cant believe.

dont be so happy coz 6670 has a max download speed of 40kbps...it can never exceed this even in perfectly ideal conditions so your tests are flawed. About the connection speeds you mentioned earlier...they can be easily modified in com port settings and show connection speed between pc and phone and no impacts whatsoever on gprs speeds. My phone connects via bluetooth at 921kbps to pc coz i've changed settings...this doesnt have any favourable impact on my gprs. P910 will most certainly be faster than 6670 coz the latter is slower class6.

@clank

yup. today i changed the com port setting and hence my P910 connected at 921Kbps . hehe

abt the test results :

nokia 6670 gave max speed of 6.1KBps

P910i now giving max speed of 7.4KBps

not bad I would say as its like free net

still 7.4
