Welcome Netheril, hope to see more posts from you!
I recon the bomb is close to bursting: there is so much potential, and if companies with the means play right, things could get so competative and improve the whole situation! Time will tell though.

hey coolapostle, I personally am on vodacom. Don't know for sure about the others. I don't really have experience with the other networks except through friends and family, but like I posted on ProDigits, I choose to be screwed by Vodacom=)
And in your country, how does the networks compare to each other?

Welcome to all the new posters...been too busy today to really post my thoughts.
@coola: Most people on here are on Vodacom...dunno why that is, ok Kryptik is on MTN but he's the exception. I know of myself and 786KBR who are on Voda...I don't need to have several sim cards- generally the service is ok. Many moons ago I was on MTN but a host of circumstances made me change my network, one of them was the poor coverage in desolate areas of South Africa...I don't know whether things have changed but three years ago getting an MTN signal outside Dordrecht in the Eastern Cape was patchy to say the least.

I'm primarily an MTN user, although i keep a Voda simcard on hand for those times when MTN has an interruption in service. Its ironic that Brix mentions the poor MTN reception in the Dordrecht area: i spent the last few days at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, where i'd been attending a seminar, and i must say that the MTN signal there is terrible. I've had occassion to visit the City Of Saints quite often over the past few months, and never have i had a full MTN signal, except when out on the open road approaching eBhayi. It's at times like those that my Voda simcard comes in handy.

I occasionally peruse the Vodacom 'specials' page.
Apart from pricing structures etc., I find it interesting to note which handsets are available on the SA market compares to the UK.
Obviously there is a wider range here for various reasons, but I noticed at least 3 handsets on the current 'specials' page which are not offered on either contract or PAYG on the UK networks:
1. The girly, spartan-specced SE Z300 (although available on continental Europe too, as I recently and briefly fiddled with one belonging to a distant Dutch relative)
2. The equally-basic,low-end SE J210
3. The more spec-rich 2mp, (although no 3G, I/R or radio) new BENQ-Siemens S88
http://www.gsmarena.com/benq_siemens_s88-1411.php
Generally though, and perhaps equally obviously, most of the higher-spec phones available here are as readily available in SA. (apart from the later availability dates of new handsets by some manufacturers like SE and Nokia, whereas some other manufacturers' new models eg. LG and Samsung seem to be available almost the same time in both countries.)
Maybe celltech, WM and 786KBR et al could quantify this further...
I've noticed SA really bridge the gap as regards range and availability of handsets (compared to the EU) since 2003, and pretty much making far quicker and greater strides with other services eg. EDGE, HSDPA advances, etc. compared to some of the networks here.
Go SA!
EDIT: Oh, and SA data rates would shame the networks here...

Vodafone UK have another nice offer for PAYG customers:
If you spend £5 (approx R75) or more during the week on calls etc., you can then make unlimited free calls and sms's to any other UK network for the entire weekend!
Nice one, Voda...suddenly I have more use for you than just the 'Stop the Clock' off-peak promotion.
My Vodafone sim resides in my Nokia 7600; time to put the phone on charge and start using it a bit more during next week...

Thank you all for the warm welcome, i do look forward to making more posts in this topic. On a side note, the online game i play held the first rounds of a allaince tournament, kind of like a football worldcup but with explosions, was good fun all around. What it even better was that players of this game setup a live stream so we could njoy all the action live.
I finally understand why saturdays here in ZA are sports days think i will rustle up some friends and get a few party favours and do nothing this whole weakend except njoy this electronic sporting event, just hope this 3gig cap holds out long enough for me to njoy it.

Hey Netheril you're most welcome on this thread.
I'm telling you Rhino,it's for off-peak,but they don't tell you that.Marketing.Just like MTN and the 2c per second. They circulated a text message to prepaid cust. saying you can now pay 2c per sec.Make a call during peak and then check your A/T and guess what, they also don't mention if it's for peak or off-peak!!
i know that, and you know that, BUT they are misleading the general public by not mentioning this on the ad
I am on vodacom primeraly, got my reasons too

I suppose that one could lodge a complaint with the Advertising Standards Authority, on the grounds that the commercial creates false hope. Section 38 of the Bill of Rights also allows anybody to institute a class action, where they feel that their rights have been infringed upon... in this instance it could be construed that Vodacom isn't living up to the promises implied in the commercial, should it be proven that their rates aren't the cheapest.
