I have to be honest and say that o2 is not my favourite in UK, nor even my second favourite

I'd suggest that if you want the iPhone experience without O2 you have two choices.

1. Get a 2g iPhone which is unlocked and use your vodafone sim
2. Get a 3g payg iPhone, buy a turbo sim thingy for a tenner and use your vodafone sim

Scooby, I'm in the same boat as you regarding current provider - only I've been with TMobile for 13 years.

I believe O2 have a 2 week timeline within which you can return the iPhone if you are unhappy - but you would have had to have bought it from an O2 store to get this option.

But do check first if you decide to buy. I know that companies change their minds with the wind!!!

Masseur, I read that if you use another provider you lose options such as internet, email and visual v/m... and also you risk the chance of bricking the phone on software update. True? Or myth?

mostly nonesense. you won't lose internet or email capability but you may lose visual email if the network you choose to use doesn't support that

Cool. Masseur, another question if I may.

I know that the iPhone doesn't sync to-do lists or notes with Outlook. But do you know if it does with iCal? I did try to google this but only got people mentioning Outlook.

Also, are you currently in London? If so I may PM you soon.

I've decided (and I can't imagine why anyone would be interested, but I'm going to tell you anyway) to get myself an Iphone in a few weeks time, when (a) it's my birthday, and (b) my current Tytn II contract is up.

Like others here I'll be leaving Vodafone and joining O2, which I'm not that crazy about - I've been with Voda for many years and never had a problem with them - but then again, I'm not a very demanding customer (I prefer to sort out my own technical problems so I don't use support too much) so frankly, as long as they provide a signal and send me the right bill, I'm happy. I hate 18 month contracts with a passion, but again, there's not much option there.

For years I've been using phones that are, at least in some ways, much more advanced than the Iphone - even my old P800 from 2002 combined a touchscreen with copy and paste, after all - but that said, none of them ever offered such a great user experience, and every time I pick up the Iphone in a shop I'm blown away by the ease and speed of the whole thing. My current Tytn II - once the apple of my eye - is left looking like a stunted throwback in comparison (although it, too, is better in other ways - I'll be keeping it for TomTom in any case).

With the Iphone I'll be inconvenienced by plenty of things - I won't be able to maintain my Exchange based tasks list for example, I'll have to use a silly Ipod cable to charge it at work rather than the sensible USB cable I have now (and no interaction between my work PC and Iphone unless I convince work to install Itunes, fat chance of that), I'll have to have a separate phone for TomTom and who knows what other sensible Windows Mobile features I'll miss from the old Tytn II... but at the end of the day, it's the magic that counts with any gadget, and the Iphone just has that magic in spades. Not been so buzzed about a phone in a long time, even though everybody else has got one already...

Boiing, I'm totally with you mate. I'm currently a Vario III user and absolutely love it apart from its size. It does though, with the use of additonal software, do a lot of the things the iPhone does. But the iPhone is far better looking, slimmer, and better overall for multimedia.

But like you I will be keeping the VIII it for tomtom Although I did read somewhere that tomtom is on the horizon on iPhone

Also with you on the iPhone and work bollards. Oh well......

I was with voda for years and years in UK but they just wouldn't do sensible data rates which is the only reason I moved to tmob, so I know where you're coming from. Also they wouldn't do non vodafine live phones even for customers who'd been with them since way before vodafone live, but thats another story

as I've said recently, the iPhone is not everything for me and I still keep WM phones.. just sold my HTC touch diamond as I'll be getting a retail X1. Is there a reason why you can't keep you're TyTN II with vodafone sim (some sort of rolling month sim as I do with tmob) and get the iPhone?... or just buy the payg iPhone and have what you really want with tmob?

while I'm a big advocate of the USB/mini-usb cable, having an ipod/iphone cable is hardly an inconvenience... and do you really need permission from work to install itunes? do you not have admin privs on your work pc? and do you not have your own pc that you can install itunes onto anyway?

pre-iPhone the WM did perfectly well for me for my music/video needs but iPhone does it so much better that I just could no longer ignore the option any more... and also since mobile browsing is a major use also, iPhone does that so well too given its screen size and standard web page capabilities (except the well known flash etc!)

I reckon no matter what phone you use for what reason, we all like to be entertained and browse on a decent size screen and iPhone really does that so well... for now
