Wasn't Rimmer in Red Dwarf trying to learn it too, and all the signs aboard the craft were in English and Esperato as well, I believe.
What I mean is that the language isn't too widespread, or at least not as widespread as perhaps it was hoped it would be.
The idea of a single European language would seem like a good one though, I could say English (as a lot of people speak it to some degree already, and the internet has spread it's influence further), but of course I am biased being a natural English speaker, and my only other linguistic skills being a few words that I remember from my French lessons from school. It is kind of embarassing that other nationalities can speak more languages than we can, whilst the majority of English can only speak... English!

You said you only speak english. Now listem what I had in high scool: Serbian (as motherlanguage), German (as first foreign language, but I know just few words), English (as second), and Latin (just basic things, with it, we can understand most of Roman languages). Now you see how much words we need to remember!

That just goes to show how bad foreign language teaching is in the UK, quite shameful really!
I'd be for something like Esperato being the official EU language if that came to pass, as then everyone would be in a similar position of starting from scratch (apart from those in Europe and around the world who already speak Esperato, of course!)

I quite like the fact that we don't have a single language, diversity is a good thing; most people speak English anyway!

english language should be the "second" language in the EU by law
neverthe less, EU wont be one country or even close to it at least next 50 years.
one thing that drives me crazy about the EU is the EU parlaiment and hell, the whole bureocracy .. I think it's ridiculous that the EU commisiaries get around 15.000 euros/month after they leave the EU commision for 3 years! even bosses of oil companies doesn't have such a golden parachute! not to mention how much earn all these EU MPs .. what are they good for when they have no power ..
and another thing is that e.g. verheugen wants turkey to join EU. come on, they are way too poor country and they are NOT europen. only less then 5% of the country is in europe .. and the ideology there is totaly different .. I simply don't get it ..

My modest and naive question.Have you ever been to Turkey.I was there 4 years ago and I hadnt have the feelings that Turkey is such poor country. If I compare hotels, recreation facilities, cars, shops and other things with our country so I dont know.
Ppl in Turkey dont look like a poor ppl according my opinion.
Yes we had generally high living standard during era of socialism - nobody was really poor. But now I thing we are aproaching to "Turkish poverty " very fast.
Thing unemployment rate and number of really poor ppl in our country
and Turkey is very similar.
So why Turkey shouldnt join to EU.
Only one problem may arise - religion.
EU is community of christian countries so far.

boto, the thing is, you have been in turkey as a tourist in a tourist resort. turkey is a big country with over 68 milion people. istambul, ankara and some other places might be quite fine, but not the whole country. noone argues, their tourist facilities are bad or so, they are excelent
but if turkey joins EU, it will cost us ca 15-20 billion euros a year in subsidies! which is more then what get all the 10 new EU members combined!
the economy isn't doing well, too. they had hyper-inlfation well over 1000% only a couple years ago! now is the inflation around 20%, still too high compared to 3% of the EU average.
over 40% of population is employed in the agricultural sector, compared to only 5% in case of slovakia. the foreign debt is extremely high. fiscal deficit is around 20% of GDP. GDP per capita is around $6000 compared to $13000 in slovakia. and slovakia is at around 47% of the EU average => turkey is around 20% ..
moreover, the turkish people have totaly different mentality .. they are not the same ..
there are some other factors (I'm really tired to lay them all down right now) but if turkey joins EU it will be and of the EU.
EU has to consolidate now, in the first place. the lasts enlargement was actually a shock therapy for the "old" EU. turkey or any other new member should be allowed to join around year 2020-2030 at the earliest ..

I'd like to know where do all
numbers know from? I must check it

.
Ppl what do you think about the joining of Turkey
and their economy.I'm in doubt to believe that EU would subsidies any country
this way [as mentioned by aquilla2].
The numbers of GDP aren't
absolutely sharps ,just checked - ratio between is right. But try to compare GDP Germany and Slovakia.
It's the same

hm what about poor Germen about Slovakia joining to EU
both
