Yeah, true. I don't think Apple shit their panties over much Microsoft/Windows stuff. More often Id say its the other way round.

I don't think so - you're still talking about an OS which sold 14m units, compared to just 4m for the Iphone last year. It has a mature and well established eco-system, compared to the Iphone which has yet to ship an SDK to my knowledge. Sure, the Iphone UI is fashionable right now, but there's more to life than finger gestures, and a lot to be said for real keyboards and proper connectivity. As flashy as the Iphone is, they're still playing catch-up on a lot of the technology underneath the UI.

Likely you're right. I was thinking more of computer OS than mobile phone OS, where a lot of people say Windows copied Apple/Mac to create Vista. I don't know if this is true, but I can see likenesses.

Done a screen size physical area calculation.

X1 3in screen area is 3.69 sq. inch
N95/N96 2.8in screen area is 3.76 sq. inch

Looks like the X1 screen is even smaller (in area) than N95-8Gb. Couple with the irregular aspect ratio, putting side-by-side photo/video viewing the X1 screen will show a much smaller photo/video size than N95-8G/N96. Dont even mention the Iphone.

So I dont see how X1 can be impressive as a multimedia device. The X1 screen is definitely a let down.

Apple iPhone = 320 x 480 pixels; 153,600 pixels in total; 43,886 pixels per diagonal inch.

XPERIA X1 = 480 x 800 pixels; 384,000 pixels in total; 128,000 pixels per diagonal inch.

(Normal PC display = 1024 x 768 pixels; 786,432 pixels in total - 2.048 times larger than X1's resolution ; 5.12 times larger than iPhone's resolution)

While both the phones are sharper than a regular PC monitor, the X1 is actually almost THREE times as crisp as iPhone's display (by pixels per diagonal inch).

I think they borrow hugely off each other, all the time - the original Windows borrowed from the Mac (which itself borrowed from other projects), Mac then borrowed from Windows (right click, anyone?), and lots of conventions got shared across them both. Sure, Vista has some OS X-like features, but then that's the competition - of course they're going to try and outdo them..

The mobile OS's are a little different - Windows Mobile began life as WinCE, and Pocket PC, and is much more of a PDA OS that grew phone features over time, so the underlying interface is quite different to that of the Iphone which was obviously conceived from the outset as a phone (albeit with Ipod etc combined). So WM has a little historical baggage, but then it's also wide open to customisation by vendors, and that's exactly what we're seeing now. HTC have already had a go with the Touch interface, which they'll improve with future devices, and now SE are having a go with their panels concept - all these things can be well integrated into WM. Yes, ultimately, as you drill down through you'll end up looking at the WM interface again, but I don't see why that's such a bad thing necessarily. If you're using the device that intently, accessing the "higher brain functions" as it were, then at that point you're really using a PDA more than a phone - and Windows Mobile is a good UI for a PDA.

What you say dont apply to viewing video. Maybe it doesnt apply to photo either if the OS downsize the photo to QVGA instead of VGA when displaying the photo. And viewing video/photo on a 65K color screen is certainly less vibrant.

@mib

Simple mathematics question, and your calculations are wrong. If you really want to show off your mathematics skills, do it properly.

Here are the REAL calculations.

The area the esato watermark covers, says "N95 8GB".

Any questions?

Update to answer your last post...

Why should it resize VGA photos to QVGA? And sure the resolution and pixels per inch has lots of things to say when watching videos. If you put a 800 x 480 pixel video on it, you'll have a remarkable amount of details. I'd like to see that on 320 x 240 videos...

I wish we could see the UI of the device. For alot of people that would be a huge factor because some have not used WM before, and noone seems to know to what extent it will be like regular WM.

PK, can we at least know WHEN we could be seeing a review of the X1? Either from you, or if you dont want to, when will we be seeing it reviewed on such sites as Mobile Review?

There have been some photos of the UI on various blog sites, etc. Sorry I don't have a link for you, but I'm sure someone will

EDIT: Been looking for the last 10 mins and I've found this so far:

Will keep looking.

Thanks very much Muhammed Oli, but, I meant the WHOLE UI. All we've seen so far is this panel system and what looks like a today screen. I want to see whether or not there are normal menus, how much of the functionality is accessed with this UI, and what is accessed using WM. I wonder when we will get to see this.
Further info:
I heard in one of the videos that the battery is 1400mAh, so battery life should be pretty good
IS there or ISNT there an accelerometer?
IS there or ISNT there stereo speakers?

According to various hints and tip offs from the likes of Mizzle and PK, Paris does exist and will be shown tomorrow. So, for everyone unsure about the WM UI, or people who may be looking for slightly different specs, in the form of a better camera, for example, that may be the way to go. Can't wait to find out tomorrow.

From what I can make out, the Panels system is just an easy task switcher - a nice way to navigate between open apps. No doubt there are some other SE-skinned apps to go with it - a dialler, a clock, etc etc - but ultimately it's a Windows phone and you will be using WM for the most part. That's not such a bad thing! WM6 is a good OS.
