So, If Sony will continue with smartphones ( as I hope )... then they have to have another partner for SoC...
I didn't wanted to say that as I hate fragmentations, not to mention the more R&D and costs behind having more work in software side, which Sony is already lacking resources to handle what they have already...
But the situation with Qualcomm isn't the first, even Qualcomm depends mostly in TSMC which is the reason of this problems mainly, And if the roadmap leaked is correct, then Qualcomm will move towards Samsung/GF joint for the next step ( 14nm )
What else Sony have as SoC source ?
The major SoC makers are
Qualcomm
Samsung
MediaTek
NVIDIA
Intel
for me, I would skip both Intel and NVIDIA duo to various reasons... limiting the choice to Qualcomm, Samsung & MediaTek
The MediaTek offering are interesting indeed, and Samsung newest chips are very good thought I have some complaints about them...
Seeing Sony already have some experience with MediaTek in the low/midrange before... I think they might put it even before Samsung's.. but the reputation of Samsung Exynos is more solid also... not to mention MediaTek still rely on other manufacturers to build their SoC, I don't know who...
Personally I prefer Qualcomm, but in some situations like this, there must be plan B
So what you guys think is the better choice... I'm not saying now a chip for Z4 which is impossible, I'm saying Sony should have a backup plan in case the 810 problems repeated again...
you mean Samsung selling the best of Exynos to Sony to have a competitor in the market?

With Music Unlimited being replaced by PlayStation Music wich launches this spring on the PS4, PS3 and 'unnamed' Xperia devices. I'm probably clutching at straws here but what is the chance that Sony will launch the Z4 range along side PlayStation Music at the back end of March or beginning of April. It would kind of make sense and since Sony normally do some kind of promo with a new flagship (at leat here in the UK) for example, you'll get 6 months free PlayStation Music when you buy any of the Z4 range. Also if any of you recall there is supposed to be a big focus on audio for the Z4 range so thre two would tie together very well.

i think people are praising Exynos a little too soon without solid evidence and bashing SD810 same way.yes the chip in Note4 was solid so was 805 that doesn't mean exynos is all awesomeness and SD is totally crap.not talking about xajel but general comments i see all over internet

Nope, it's just discussion about which SoC you see is good enough to be plan B, nothing about a real change.

Personally, I don't like Exynos either, I don't see why it's so much praised for nothing special or unique about it, I mean it's just copy paste of original designs and even MediaTek can make like it if they wish.
But like I said above, it's just about what other options are good beside Qualcomm.
My best option will be that Sony partnering with Qualcomm/MediaTek to have a custom made SoC and being made with Saumsung/GF 14nm FinFET... but there's a problem that the cost of R&D will worsen the Sony's already troubled financial condition.

It would makes sense to me. Leveraging the PS brand for their mobile phones seems like a good idea, although I hope they keep the Walkman app.

@goldenface I'd expect them to intergrate it into the Walkman app just like music unlimited is at the minute.

No Z4 Ultra. More low end and mid range phones. Great.

^Until it's confirmed that there will not be another Z Ultra I wouldn't rule it out, who knows Sony may decide to launch it at a different time just like the original Z Ultra.
