2 boto: majority of the subsidies (like 10 billion euros) would flow to agriculture and it's actually by european law so .. and the figures are pretty much correct ...

As I said it before, Turkey does not belong to EU! It is Asia country, and it would be insane to let them join EU.

I don't agree with you when you say that Turkey should not be allowed to join the EU, nor do I agree that Turkey is an Asian country. Turkey is almost unique in that, along with Russia, it is only one of two nations that straddle two continents. Turkey is not culturally an Asian country, nor is it culturally a European country; Turkey seems to be a rather strange mixture of both.

Historically Turkey had a great deal of territory in Europe and I really don't see what religion has to do with anything since the EU is a secular organisation, which does not descriminate on the basis of one's religion. Many nations in Europe are in fact very secular with no strong religious involvement in government i.e. France, the UK, Germany, etc. Should Bosnia be allowed to join the EU as it has a very large Muslim community? Discrimintion on religious grounds goes against the EU's values.

With all the talk of how Turkey would need to be subsidised I should point out that the very same argument was made for not admitting many former communist nations to the EU. The aim of the EU is to improve standards in Europe and Turkish inclusion would only benefit the rest of us in my opinion.

I didn't said that Russia should enter EU!Russia should not be member of EU,too.I didn't said anything with religion,I don't mind they are muslims.Whole Balcan half-island was under Turkey for 500 years! We still feel consequences (spelling!)!Do you know why Bosnia and Albania are muslim countries? That's coz they stayed longer under Turkey. We,Serbs sufferd 500 years, they killed us,rape our women, took our children...While whole world was advancing,we were staying in one place, unable to develope or anything. I didn't say that you were advocating Russian entry to the EU, I was merely mentioning Russia in the context of my point regarding Turkey.

I can see that this discussion is in danger of sliding into an argument over historical atrocities and 'who did what to whom', so I think we should probably try to steer clear of that. You are obviously biased against Turkey, but you have to remember that most of the rest of Europe isn't; I don't think many people in Britain, for example, would raise any more objections to Turkish membership of the EU than they did towards Polish or Hungarian membership.

Whatever one nation may have done to another five hundred years ago is irrelevant now. We cannot live in the past and there will never be true peace in Europe if we continue to dredge up events, which we have no first hand experience of.

If we all held something against a nation for something that happened hundreds of years ago, the British would have moaned about the French being in the EU, and objected about it. Mind you, many here in the UK still do object to the French as some there may still do about us, but not to the extent we openly are hostile about each other, to me it seems more of a 'friendly' rivalry now. I think, anyway!

As a Scot, I think we should kick England out of the EU! The English, as a "race" are too cynical about Europe. This message was posted from a T68i

Oooh, absinthe, very racist of you!

I take your point though, a lot of English are very cynical about Europe. I'm trying to be more open minded about the EU and can see the benefits more now that I used to, they just need to cut down on their beauracracy (excuse spelling) and corruption. The idea of a united Europe, which could seriously challenge the US as a superpower, is quite appealing.

It might also give the planet a bit more balance, giving the US a challenger to their 'hyperpower' crown!

I'm with you on this, Sammy. The EU as an organisation has many faults but I find the concept of a federal Europe appealing both as a means to promote co-operation and as a counter-balance to the US. This message was posted from a T68i
