I think it was more a feature of the early Church.
There are some ways 'around' it I believe.

you may be right. there are a number of technicalities used, which may have been mentioned earlier in this thread.
for example, the bank will buy the house and sell it to you at a "higher price" - which you pay off in convenient monthly installments that miraculously work out to coincide with the going interest rate.
i think there's another one where you "rent" the property from the bank, and after 25 years they "give" it to you.

You can't be technical with religion in my opinion.
I mean, it's not a contract, you can't find loopholes in it, because you're still doing something wrong.
Thats why I think Islamic Banks are stupid.

agreed. it's probably fair enough to maintain a payment structure which keeps pace with the market value, since the property will appreciate over 20 years or so, but i think the point of the "no interest" stipulation is so they don't make a profit. it's meant to be more in the nature of a favour.

I found this to be of interest and rather awe inspiring at the same time. On 11th June 1963 Buddhist monk Thich Quang Duc set himself on fire and burned to death to protest the oppression of the Buddhist majority in Vietnam by the Catholic Diem regime.
David Halberstam, a reporter from the New York Times described the scene:

What do other religions state regarding whom you can marry?

Taoism has no set rules on marriage of that sort, Taoists would respect the laws of the country, in which they reside. Also Taoists believe in acting in accordance with nature so Taoists would observe the natural order of things e.g. you don't see many animals mating with their mothers!

christianity pretty much covers the same ground. in the old testament there is a prohibition on interracial marriage. however, the new testament is pretty clear that a christian is free to marry another "true believer" irrespective of race.
