That is some great news. It seems we have a solid release date and price now. I wonder if at&t will pick it up and subsidize it though.

Hi,

I'm really sorry if this has been discussed before, but I'm hoping someone might be able to give me some advice on how to get some decent quality video playback on the X1.

I have a series of videos that when watched on my laptop are very good quality. I have tried converting these to all sorts of formats, WMV, MP4, FLV, 3GP, etc but anything in WMV format seems to barely play on either Media Player or Coreplayer, and anything else just seems rubbish quality.

Even when watching the converted videos on my laptop they are good quality, and thats on a much much larger screen, so it can't be my conversion software.

Does anyone have any ideas or software they use to convert videos for good quality, speedy playback on the X1? The one key thing I need is the ability to trim the videos (i.e in my existing converter I can set the start and end points if I don't want to convert the whole video).

Any help would be great!

What bitrate are you encoding the videos at and what resolution?

I've tried bitrates of 1500 down to 512 and all seem the same. Have tried resolutions of 800x480, 640x480 and 480x270

hmmm I don't have a X1 myself but 1.5mbit at 800x480 should work.

This is based on my uses of WM devices.

I have a 4 year old Ipaq HX4700 with a 600Mhz processor that has a VGA screen. It runs 1.5mbit fine via core player. The file is MP4 and was encoded with Nero using 2 passes, 25 keyframes.

It would be interesting to hear if anyone else has done some encoding.

Hi all,

For those of you that are still concerned about Video playback on the X1 as i have said before this was one of the things that X1 really impressed me with. As with properly converted material the results are nothing short of stunning IMO. I also don't really think there is any need to add a 3rd party player either as the built in player plays things perfectly.

Anyway i use a program called Movavi Video Converter 6 which i had already purchased and used with previous devices. All that is needed is to set up a custom profile and enter 800x480 as your custom settings and then the program enters all the other settings for you. If you want to try it you can download a trial version that will allow you convert 30% of a file to see how good it is. Below is my previous post with all the conversion settings that it produces.

I have converted an episode of Dexter and the Simpsons to 800x480 MP4 using Movavi Video Converter 6 which i use for all my conversions for the different devices i use.

The only difference between this and my Bold settings is the ratio it still converts the files to a default setting of

Video
800x480
25fps
698kbps

Audio
AAC Profile LC
198kbps
Sample rate 48,000

The files produced using these settings give full screen video with no black bars and the quality is excellent no stutter or lag and perfectly in Sync.

Video playback and Music playback where the two areas that i was most interested in seeing how the X1 performed and IMO it performs very well indeed and i am more than satisfied with the results from both.

Dogmann, do you play the videos that you convert using the above method through Media Player? Because when I convert a video to Mp4, it doesn't seem to even display the file on my phone
