@plank, the low light c902 you posted is certainly clear - but it's also under-exposed (due to centre of exposure being the sunset).

I used this technique on the K750 to get noise free (but under exposed) low light pics. But it still doesn't change the fact that a properly exposed low light cheap cmos pic has massive noise or detail destroying NR.

I agree with Abusim about the desire for the ability to take true low light pics without noise or wavy noise reduction artifacts.

It doesn't have to be CCD, but it's just that at this stage of digital sensor technology, at the small sensor sizes needed in mobile phones, CMOS just isn't capable of producing the nice clear noise free images that a comparably sized CCD can.

But the situation is improving all the time. I predict that CCD will never be common in mobile phones, but that CMOS technology will improve to the point where we get good low light performance even in small CMOS sensors. A good example of progression in this area is the Olympus 4/3rds CMOS sensor, the smallest DSLR sensor yet and still very good quality - good enough to compete with the big boys of DSLR (see the E3 for example)

And, not quite as smooth as Abusim's segue, here's my phone pic

Makes a great little dedicated mp3 player, but shite phone...

Very nice replacement for my expired i-mobile 902, although not due to the camera (duh!), but for everything else, including WALKMAN 3.0 that plays my DRM-stripped iTunes music and audio books without the need for converting to other formats.

Also, this is my first phone in a long time (since K700i) that doesn't give of cereal noises from it's case
