Well, I did what I said I would and went and played with the iPhone over the weekend.
And IMHO i felt that:
a) it had a great look to it and the touch screen was very responsive.
b) BUT texting with the qwerty keyboard was darned hard and I kept making mistake after mistake after....
c) In order to do something as simple as dial a number or turn on bluetooth you have to go through so many presses.
d) calendar entries and reminders where somewhat un-user friendly - especially if you had to access certain dates/appts quickly.
e) if i had a lot of apps installed i would have to scroll and look carefully to find ones i wanted. it would be great if apple had a folder option on the home screen rather than all apps bundled into one muddled mess; ie games, tools, business etc
f) no way have syncing to-do list
But having said all this I'm holding out hope that apple will fix some of these things and so I'm still going to get an iphone and trial it for a couple of weeks. And if after that time I dont like it I can return it.
Oh, and did I mention that the thing does look darned nice

Yeah i understand your point about inputting a number, having to open up the phone app, then the keyboard tab...it takes a tad longer than just typing in the number straight away. With the regard to the texting - it gets better trust me! It just takes some getting used to, but the word correction is very good on it so if you just mis-type a letter, carry on typing and it'll correct the word at the end.
I can answer one of your concerns, cos this is one things thats keeps me on a jailbroken iphone, an application called Categories... i too couldn't stand having apps everywhere, and all different types jumbled up. This is a simple way of finding what you want pretty quickly, and keeps everything neat and organised in folders

Can the icons you use for folders be changed to different ones? Or are the ones in your picture the only folder icons you can use?
As for typing on the keyboard - a lot of people have said exatly what you have, that it gets easier with time.

absolutely, you can choose from loads of different incons that come in the package with Categories. Or you can change them yourself to any icon you want, as long as the icon is named the same as the folder
Apps like that really are a god-send to the iphone... stuff like that should really be implemented in to standardised firmware

OK. Another question please boys. Can the iPhone record onto Sky+ boxes from remote locations? I checked the Sky website but the iPhone is not compatible. But I know that some other makes of phones which also are not compatible have other programmes which enables them to record from the pub, shopping etc

I haven't found any apps that can do sky remote record from the iPhone yet, except by navigating to the web page where you can click to record just as you would on a pc. The ones that sky do provide are java so none of those would work.
Unfortunately because of the way sky have that web page setup so you can pan around the program listings while maintaining the top and side bars means that it doesn't look too great on the iPhone
