That's up to the user.. if you max out the sharpness they get quite sharp
example:
The more sharpness you use, the more grain.. the 808, in auto mode is set for minimum grain.
The 1020 is set for max sharpness, but the images have more grain to them.

The 1020 goes sharper than this but of course overdoing and not necessarily the correct approach at such scenes..
But under most lighting conditions, the 808 does tend to stay soft with lower contrast.. Which is the neutral approach..

This thread has motivated me to do a photo shoot out between my DSLR and 920
Don't know, just for fun.. And will not put both cameras on auto.. Would shoot auto and my own setting for each scene..
Will have a tripod as well..
I don't know anyone with an 808 or 1020 unfortunately..
The 1020 was just released in Germany.. One of my friends is planning though to upgrade his 920 to the 1020.. I will have all the hands on I need if he decides to..

This thread is getting out of hand. Bonovox is now talking about DSLRs.
Theres no point. The whole point of cameraphones is that being a mobile phone they go everywhere with you. If I wanted the maximum quality id never buy a cameraphone. Theres 4K cameras or whatever they're called, you can have a DSLR or a dedicated compact. But you cant take them everywhere. In essence we're still talking about mobile phones.
So in regards to mobile phones, the 808 takes the better pictures and the 1020 comes close, possibly better with a future update.

Heavily processed, no full resolution.. no way to see how it really did.
Regardless, I was reading a magazine yesterday and the cover photo was taken with a 1020

I went to a galleria here near where I live. Microsoft has an area where staffs were demoing surface 2, Pro and Lumia 1020.
For me it was refreshing to try something new and images did look great for being a phone.
@Bonovox
A cheap compact camera is the closest this will come to.
Regarding what you wrote before; I would say there is no cheap compact camera able to match DSLR.
The only ones able to match DSLR quality are the expensive ones from Sony RX100 II and RX100.
