It's not a symbian thing. It's a SonyEricsson thing. Nokia does SE doesn't.

I know the Sony Clie line could have their alarms work when switched off.. but those are a little different, I guess haha.
Best you can do, I guess is switch to flight mode.

I'm shooting in the dark here but hey, let's try something. Have you created a wifi account for yourself in your phone? If you have, then delete it so that you'd connect to the default DefaultWiFiAccount. Then find a router/network with no security and try to connect, it should then connect to the phone's default account. Let's strip down to the basics first to see if everything's ok with your hardware before we take a closer look at your settings

guys, how can i play .avi files using the file manager? when i click on the file it says "no program to play this file" or something like that appears even though i have smartmovie... i have many .avi files and if i browse them directly in smartmovie all the files are in one directory hard to find the ones i want to watch... hope anybody can help me out, thanks!

Afaik, Symbian OS does not offer association of file extensions with applications, hence you have to start/open these apps/files from the app which supports them.
