Like mentioned above, everyone should seriously look over the N97 if you're in the market for a X1, and are not in a rush to get one. My X1 unfortunately comes in the mail today, and had I known about this monster I may have waited, maybe, though probably not tbh....

I dont get it, what is so great about the N97? The X1 trumps it in quite a number of ways. I suppose the only reason to get it overthe X1 would be for S60 over WM. But given that the prices will be about the same, theres clearly no way Id choose that rubbish over an X1. I mean COME ON!!! N*kia designers cant draw to save their lives!!! Its clearly just a mix of X1, iphone and Tytn II, but with no unique styling of its own. But noone will look at X1 and tell you its not unique. Besides, X1 also manages to be a good deal smaller than the silly gender-confused (am I, or am I not a PDA?) N97.

Without seeing the platform in action i can't comment on it so i don't know if i could be won over there. I'm a first time user of WM but i genuinely love it. The N97 looks monstrous unfortunately, absolutely ghastly. The specs are impressive, the memory perhaps a bit excessive but it seems like a well rounded machine, i hope SE actually challenge this new phone with something exceptional unlike their challenge against the N95. A few months down the line if i saw the N97 in black with a few aesthetic tweaks i could change my mind though!

The XPERIA looks and feels like a premium device irrespective of what is in the market. The N97 will be in the market in Q2 2009 and as reported by many websites, SE will undergo serious cost cutting in the 1st Q of 2009 as a result of which, their phones wil come down to a more competitive price. If you are willing to wait, then do so, but i know people who have waited and then something else strikes their mind and they keep waiting again.

Okay, I'll bite. I think it's pretty extreme to call the N97 rubbish. As someone who plans on buying the X1 within the next few weeks, I have to say I'll probably be getting it as a placeholder until the N97 comes out. Not sure how the X1 "trumps the N97 in a number of ways"...
As far as I can tell the X1 only has two things on the N97: sleeker design and higher resolution screen. Here are the reasons why I'll most likely switch to the N97 from the X1 when it comes out:
5mp camera without crippled video for Americans, like the QVGA video the X1a has.
Nokia Nseries phones have always boasted VERY loud speakers, great for handsfree calling or music/radio. I've read several reviews and opinions that the X1 speaker is too low. In California, where driving while talking on the phone is illegal, the handsfree is a must, and I don't like bluetooth headsets.
Larger 3.5 inch screen 16million colors. Another often-mentioned setback of the X1 is its small screen and tiny font size, especially for menus. Also, only 65 thousand colors.
Dual LED flash vs X1's "photolight"
GPS Digital compass
Proximity sensor. The X1 does not. This turns the screen off when it senses it's close to your face when making a call, therfore saving batter life.
32gb included memory plus expandable slot for up to 48gb. X1 comes with virtually no storage space out of the box and current SD cards are mostly 16gb.
The tilting screen is subjective, but I like the idea that I can set the N97 in front of me, say in an airplane, and watch movies like a mini laptop. The X1 lays flat, except a slight curve, so you'd need to prop it up against something.
Accelerometer. The X1 has none.
TV out. The X1 has none.
More space between the keys on the QWERTY keypad, and (this is just my own speculation) probably more responsive keypad buttons. The X1 has been criticized a lot for the keypad buttons being too "soft". If the N97 is the same as its Nokia QWERTY brethren E90 or E71 this shouldn't be a problem.
Like I said, I plan on getting the X1, but will likely go for the N97 eventually based on the above facts. And Tigershark, please don't look at this as a an attack on you, you asked what's so great about the N97 and I'm just answering.

Make it more RAM for the X1 with dedicated graphics Ram and also a better proccy and full metal finish. Also, it isnt the N97 competitor either, we will see more in the upcoming months, esp in MWC. We would obviously expect a phone, which has been announced 10 months after the X1 to have btter specs.
