@all,

Some of you really seem to have missed the point of what this device is targeted at, it is a N Series device not a E series device it is not the E90 replacement that is still to come and will build on the N97 specs.

I much prefer a true widescreen larger screen and will reserve comment on the lower resolution until i actually see it in action. It just doesn't need as much Ram or as fast a processor as the X1 because it's not WM it's just that simple WM has always needed more processor and Ram that's nothing new and to pretend different is well silly.

The N97 from Nokia's own blurb tells you it's aimed at the Internet Social Networking and entertainment market of course it will still run most if not all Business apps but it's not an E series Business class device.

The one thing it has managed to do though is with it's Web Runtime Widgets put active Widgets on the Home screen that run in real time. Just like SE said their panels would do but as yet have failed to deliver.

Enjoy your X1's as the N97 won't be out till some time in the first half of next year and wait and see what the E90 replacement offers as IMO that will build on the N97's specs and improve on them greatly.

Marc

@ Malkmus,

not at all, in fact you actually raised some good points, some of which I hadn't thought of before. But I maintain what I said. Ok ok, 'rubbish' was abit over the top, but that was there mainly just to silence everyone who suddenly thought so much more of the N97 than the X1, and also because I genuinely do think its better in any case. I agree the N97 has a few more peripheral features, like a tv out, and a compass, for some reason (why, when you have google maps? I dont know) and a proximity sensor, but all those are things I for one could very easily live without (in fact, it makes me question whether I would want to pay more to have a device with these features at all).

But what really suprises me is the way they call it the best/smallest mobile computer currently available. I'm sorry, but its not just the X1 its challenging there. With that statement its trying to push aside the entire Winmo camp, and that is just ridiculous. With the likes of HTC Touch Diamond, HTC Touch Pro, HTC Touch HD and the Xperia X1 (and possibly even the HTC Tytn II), N97 is being pitted in a battle it just cant and wont win. All the above mentioned devices are absolute titans which will trump the N97 on not only features and capabilites, but sheer computing power (processing, RAM, document handling, email handling, etc). So it really doesn't make much sense to me. They probably shouldve made it winmo if they wanted to really make that claim.

The N97 screen (for me anyway) doesnt come close to that of the X1. Put them side by side and the x1 will put the N97 to shame there, because most people wont notice the different number of colours, but will definately notice the huge difference in resolution. Another thing I wanted to mention was: Im not convinced by the sliding mechanism it uses (where it automatically tilts the screen up). The angle looks like it is abit too much. This is not like the HTC Tytn II, where you could angle it the way you wanted. The 'one slant fits all' approach adopted there seems a pretty presumptuous design decision to me. Sounds like something which would initially be a great novelty, but then would get pretty annoying.

I dont want to get into software, but the X1 has: Opera 9.5, Panels UI, SPB shell (as a panel), Facebook (as a panel), Google (as a panel), MSN (as a panel), all as standard fare. Then you can get flash lite 3, core player, etc etc etc. To me S60 touch (with there being no difference in the touch which WM has used for years) is therefore beaten, but to each his own there. The accelerometer issue is where the X1 falls flat, as well as the speaker (granted). X1 wins again on battery life, N-series has always lost to SE there , and finally, even with looks aside, there is the issue of build quality. it would take much longer to break an X1 than to break that N*kia. the X1 will survive more use with less build issues. Being made of metal isnt only an aesthetic choice.

I think the greatest deciding factor between smartphones should be the available software. We'll have to see how things work out software-wise for the N97. I think:

-more useful panels
-WVGA WinMo software
-a ROM update from SE
-PlayNow service
-WinMo 6.5
(in other words, a finished X1 )

will keep X1 a strong competitor well into 2009. The N97 will be starting from ground zero with touch software.

@Dogmann
I don't see why Nokia would release a successor to the E90. It seems like the E90 has been absorbed into the N97. What features would an E90 successor bring ? Has one been announced ?

I watched the black N97 video, 3 things i didn't like or wasn't impressed with. The end of the sliding motion looked clunky, and the start screen was nice but providing the panels come further in the months leading up to the launch i'd be happy with those, and i can't stand the camera shutter! It does look a lot nicer black though, the proximity sensor is a nice feature but not something i need or would miss and neither is an accelerometer but it does give the impression of a more well rounded device.

Im assuming you have used a N97 since you are already saying its screen is rubbish. Please tell me how your experience was with this device? Thanx.

Some people will buy anything from SE! and prior to release claim it's going to be the best which doesn't make it true either.

Anyone want to remember the P990 and all the UIQ3 devices on release? How about the best 5 megapixel camera phone the K850 also winner of most stable firmware on release and for the next year NOT and of course there's more for the list if needed.

Oh yes and of course now the X1 with the highly plugged Active Panels that aren't, well not yet anyway. Plus all the basic tweaks and fixes that seem to have been needed straight out the box. That haven't even come from SE but great users and developers of the WM community.

Your right the X1's screen is very good it's nice and bright and clear and is 800x480 just such a shame it's to narrow.

@WhyBe

Simple this is an N Series device and is not a business first device, it can of course handle Business type apps. This is also not a flagship E series device and that is what the E90 replacement will be, not to long now but wait and see what that delivers. As despite what you were so happy to say even now so long after release the E90 is still king of the smart phones and the only thing that stops me buying one again is the knowledge it's replacement is coming soon.

Both the N97 and X1 have their up- and downsides. Personally I don't know which to buy, because the X1 looks better (not that n97 doesn't look good) and it has a better resolution.
N97 has a lot bigger screen and a 5MP camera and also a better OS, for me, that is I'd rather not like to use the stylus, really !

Don't say the P990 is/was bad, I just loved it.
Far better than P800 and P910.

I just got the X1 because it looked nice (although i feared having to use winmo slightly.....).

Still miss my P990 a little, especially the one handed dialling. ( it's in my bag right next to me now as an X1 backup, who trusts windows ?)

And where's the scroll wheel?? aiii caramba!
