I gotta say I'm with Miz. I certainly don't need PowerPoint animations on my phone.
As a point of comparison, as of last report, S60 Touch doesn't feature transitions either.

"Let me ask you this then... Is a nice user interface needed?"
Yes it is! I am a "businessman" and I do love nice user Interfaces! What kind of concept do Ericsson people have about businessmen?
Itīs like a good dinner, apart from the taste it must also look appealing to the eye!
The user Interface of the Iphone is a true masterpiece. And that the grand players like Nokia and Sony/// havent managed to come up with something even remotely competitive to it speaks for itself.
Hence the great hope in the P5! A phone with the renowned qualities of a true Sony///, yet rejuvenated by the inspiration of the IPhone.
If not, us businessmen will wait for the 2nd Iphone generation

another screen size pic...
this measurement is based on SonyEricsson logo, which is 22 mm on T610 and P990 , so I guess it is standard size....if you have some other phone, feel free to measure it and post if different...
anyway ... it is 2.8'' according to this
EDIT:
it seems that 22 mm is not thee standard logo size, so this measurement is has nothing to do with reality !
thanks chombos1 !

With the release of the SDK, iPhone 2 could become a powerful business device and do it with style and ease.
Paris should have a nice menu layout with a modern look and fluid motion.

Mizzle. Of course its not NEEDED. But how often do people buy something which theyre gonna carry around with them all the time based on what they need and not at all what they want or would like to see. Given the choice, theyd go for the nice looking one every time. First impressions are lasting impressions. And IMHO, its more than a marketing tool. The phones now do what we want them to do. We almost expect that to come as standard out of the box. What we look for now, in addition to this, is the fun and joy of using it. And an intuitive UI provides us with just that. Its a very powerful message to other manufacturers, saying 'you can take all your fancy specs and throw them all away, because with one feature we make our customers HAPPIER than you do with your overblown spec sheets'. I myself love a phone to have great specs (but Im not necessarily an 'average' consumer, Im a techie in general lol), but I still want it to look attractive and be easy, and almost rewarding to use.
Further to this, I have to say that if you represented a major manufacturer right now, I would be forced to buy from someone else, because, put simply, instead of listening to what people want, youre telling us what we should have :S.

Do I have to repeat myself? It's a business handset! Businessmen aren't young teenagers, you know.

I have to agree, if style was of no consequence to buisiness people, then the sucessful ones wouldn't wear rolexs, drive ridiculously priced sports cars etc. etc.
To such people, status and the symbols of it are of importance - makes them feel that they're not p*ssing their lives away in the poinless persuit of endless capital gain, or missing out on anything

Here it comes..............DUH!
It is near to obligatory for the user interface to be intuitive and good looking (with smooth transitions and animations ala iPhone). It's a flagship for crying out loud! AND as far as I know, its 2008!
I am telling you if they put in some crap UI, ths phone will SUCK (and I mean it).

Its true. Forget all the features and that. Its just not worth all the money if it isnt a treat to use.
