It hasn't been checked since last october. I would advise you to try to upgrade and see what's happens.

sorry for the lack of reply. been very busy for the past month.
al_1982a - i'm afraid of bricking it.

I tried backing up my phone a few weeks about, but turns out the cable was broken. i tried got another cable now.
I backed up my files using the Backup manager. had a bit of problem with the not enough space message but i'm ok now. i backed up the calendar, notes, contacts, tasks, and the unified inbox. I'm assuming that the unified inbox is my saved SMS, which will still be there when i upgrade the firmware and do a restore.

anything else i need to be before i attempt to upgrade?

thanks

Speed boost for your UIQ3 phone

By ares on May 9th, 2008

This method was discovered by Darkus from smart-se.ru:
First, make some general tests using your contacts and messaging apps. Scroll, creat new, search by letter, insert, etc. Remember the speed of it!
Install pips_uiq_1_2_ss.sis
Install stdioserver_uiq_1_0.sis
Reboot. If necessary, reboot again.
Now…repeat the tests you made in 1
Watch how both contacts and messaging, the weak links of UIQ3 devices, are now working faster!

Pay attention, we do not know all side effects of this procedure, so there is risk! Also, Zed from CPS reckons speed improvements might be different from phone to phone, much like what happened with Twin Peaks.
Update: PIPS has been updated (both files actually). Here they are. Remember to install PIPS first, both files on drive C.

(thanks to Remi for the heads up)

Hi guys
I saw some cheap p990 for sale in a local forum these days.
I searched the last 16 or 17 pages of the smartphones forum and i didn't find a lot of p990 threads.
So I'm asking is it worth it?
Are there new tweaks taken form p1,w960, g700 and g900 that work on the p990. Is it stable with the last FW. Are there hacked and modified custom FWs for it (like the WinMo devices).

Well...I am on my second P990 now ... Had first one for two years, but decided to sell it after Jog Dial went berserk and the scratches became too visible. Was thinking about G900 for a while, but I am just sooo hoked on GDesk + SMP + qwerty + fairly big screen + Jog Dial, I could not make the change yet. Currently, I see no device that would completely be able to replace it, in spite of its shortcomings. ( P1's design didn't appeal to me...)

First year with it was hard though, I don't think it would have sticked with me if it was my main phone for calls - have a dumb phone for that. 128 MB of RAM to begin with, could have made it almost perfect

paid about 150 € , and I am as happy as I can be

The only thing I miss on the P990i is a good audio book player. The built-in media player has problems when resuming very long MP3 files. It usually skips to the next file in the book.
Anyone know of any good audio book player software? Can the Audible player play MP3/M4A/M4B files?

Edit: In answer to my own question: Escarpod will play audiobooks in MP3+M3U format.

Edit 2: Unfortunately the MP3 bug seems to be affecting Escarpod as well. Seems that I need to forget about playing audiobooks on my P990i
