Yeah that's what I was thinking, it often happens when MS Office 'goes wrong'. (sorry, but there's no technical way of describing it! )

It's almost certainly down to an app somewhere that hasn't installed properly, often it's down to one or more components not getting registered correctly which makes windows think that the app has not completed it's installation process. This can be caused by a number of things, from something as simple as a corrupt installer file to some quite nasty malware that takes over control of registry permissions on a per-user or global basis.

To be honest though, this is one of those problems where I'd have to be actually in front of the computer to try and sort it out. What I would suggest though is to create a new user with administrator privilages and see if the same thing happens.

And if it does mainly happen with MS Office (word, exel etc.) you can try uninstalling it, creating the new user as above and reinstalling office under the new user.

Hi,

The following just happened to me. I had left my laptop alone and on, it had gone to standby. When i clicked the mouse and activated it again, a purpleish vertical line had appeared. It goes right from the top of the screen, and right to the bottom. It appears to be one pixel wide. It is there 'on top' of whatever is displayed on the screen. I tried to take a 'screenshot' of my desktop, but it doesn't show up on the capture.

I just can't work it out. I tried restarting, but it's still there. Also, nothing remarkable has happened to my laptop i.e. I haven't dropped it, installed new programs, had a crash or any other problems...

Any help or input would be greatly appreciated.

Does it persist after rebooting the system? If yes, this sounds like a hardware problem...

It is still there after a reboot. I can however not work out how it happened. The laptop was just sitting there, and when I got back an hour later the line had appeared!?!?!?
