Ok, here's another take on the Media Xperience Panel - it is a Today screen replacement. All Panels are actually Today screen replacements.
Once you're in the Media Xperience Panel, it presents a media-centric interface for you to access your media files and contacts (ostensibly, so you could share media files with them in some ways, whatever...)
So you start playing some music files and now you want to do something else, like maybe open Viigo and read some web feeds. You press the Start menu, fire up Viigo (great app by the way), and start reading your Wired articles. Music continues to play in the background. Everything is hunky dory.
You want to change a track or adjust volume, you press Start -> Today and fiddle with the onscreen controls (remember, no AVRCP in Media Xperience Panel!).
Heaven forbid you now that you press that X Panel button, for once you do so AND select some other panel, your music will shutdown! Your Media Xperience ends there, and you have moved into another reality.
Living with Panels means that you have a multi-faceted life, and they CANNOT overlap... at the present moment. So now, we need SE to find some way to break down the space/time barrier, fold the Panel fabric and create wormholes between Panels.
It is the last frontier... where no programmer have gone before... V'ger awaits...

This may explain some problems. I'm glad I canceled my order with expansys. I'd rather get it from a store where I'll have no problem returning it if it's buggy. BTW, Borisinvin's stories are really dissuading me from the purchase, but i'd like to know, is anyone else having massive bluetooth problems? Specifically for listening to music. I listen to music over bt headphones with my N95 when I jog and while sometimes it skips a bit, it's nothing as bad as what he's describing. What's the general consensus on BT performance? Specifically stereo music playback. Thanks!

I have the Sony DR-BT22 bluetooth stereo headphones.
I've only used the Wireless Stereo profile and not the phone headset profile.
I can skip/pause/restart tracks from the headset in WMP. I don't seem to be able to ff/rew though.
The Sony Media Panel doesn't respond at all to the bluetooth controls, though, I still get stereo playback.
I don't know what to blame for the shortcoming. I'm guessing the Sony Media Panel is the culprit.

Boris,
The fact that the Media panel stops playing when you switch panels is
by design. It is not a bug. Sony Ericsson originally stated that the panels would all be active at once, but they didn't deliver on that, and maybe it was a technical limitation, or a practical decision. Whatever the case, the panels are
not always active; only one is active at any one time.
Think about it: you can only have
one panel running at any one time.
ONE. If you choose the Media panel, start playing music, and then
SWITCH TO ANOTHER PANEL, the music
SHOULD stop playing!! It
should not continue!! The Panel Manager is to blame, not the Media panel!
The Bluetooth problem is with the Media Panel, yes, but the music problem is not.
If you want to use the Media Panel as a separate application, then try
this. You can then find the Xperia Radio and Media panel in your Programs list from the Start menu.

@all: to install the .NET Compact Framework 3.5:
1. First, you need to have your phone connecting and working with ActiveSync (or Windows Mobile Device Centre on Vista) on your PC.
2. Go
here to download the .NET CF 3.5 installer.
3. Connect your phone to your PC, and ensure ActiveSync is active and working.
4. Run the installer. It will install the .NET CF 3.5 on your PC, and when it's almost done, it will install it on your phone as well.
If you can't use ActiveSync for whatever reason, then I may have another way to do this: the .NET CF 3.5 installer puts CABs on your PC. There's a few of them, and I don't know which one is appropriate for the X1 because I used the above method to install rather than the manual way. You can try coping the CABs to your X1 via memory card + reader, or Bluetooth. Alternatively, I can upload the CABs to my web server for you to try.
Oh, and my X1 works fine. Hangs can almost always be blamed on the apps you've installed on the phone, and if not that, then there's something wrong with the hardware.
What I suggest you do with any new smartphone, be it an X1, another WM phone, a UIQ phone, or even a S60: go looking for programs that you'll need. Then find some freeware app sites and go browsing through them, downloading any and all apps that you find interesting. Install them all, a couple at a time, and take note of any performance differences you get with the phone in general. Now, you know which apps are good and which ones will screw up your phone. Do a factory reset, and only install the apps that you know will not screw up your phone.
The paint on my silver X1 is starting to come off as well. At the top, around the speaker, the paint (or finish or whatever it is) is coming off. It still looks good underneath, just not the mix of the two where some has come off and some is still there. Underneath it's just not as shiny, but the metal is still brushed. Anyone else get this issue?
I also hate the networking and data connection configurations in WM. It's completely retarded. There's different connection thingoes that do the same thing, there's... AAGH it's HORRIBLE. It's SOOOO much better in UIQ3. I'd just like to be able to group connections, or even just tell stuff to only connect via WiFi. And how the HELL am I supposed to set up a VPN!? I also don't think it's too much to ask to be able to delete connection settings, especially when
they aren't even being used.
Other than these and a couple of other tiny gripes, I love my X1. It's fantastic. I'd take this over an iPhone, N95, N96, Tube or whatever else any day.
And about the Bluetooth issues... Even if the Bluetooth on your device is stuffed for some reason, it's better for you to only be able to get some services to work like file transfer, and for it to annoyingly shut off automatically after three minutes, than to have
the worst and most pathetic Bluetooth support since its introduction (I'm looking at YOU, Apple).
My advice to anyone thinking about buying an X1: It's awesome, but you need to be prepared to nurture Windows Mobile until you've customised it and configured it how you like. You can change a lot of things that you might find annoying about WM, but it takes time and patience. Lots of patience. If you'd rather have a phone that just works, then I'd advise against getting an X1 for a while and waiting to see what future firmware updates (both official and otherwise) will bring, or get something else. But if you're used to WM, or are prepared to put in a bit of effort to get it how you like, then the X1 will make an excellent phone.

edit: I thought the point would be obvious? The point of disconnecting your data connection is so that it doesn't kill your battery, imagine if I actually had a working 3G network connected and running on my phone instead of JUST edge?!? Would you want that thing connected and on 24/7 with your X1? Are you currently on AT&T with your X1 using it all of the time? You know they have soft caps right, and will throttle your data speeds down to GPRS speeds if you exceed their soft cap limits?... Not to mention Your battery would be dead by mid day (I think I read you get about 6 hours of service from the phone using 3G)! Also, I don't want to excessively use my mobile internet causing Tmob to become suspicious of me... That's it in a nutshell, plus like I previously stated all of my other phones have terminated their data connection after using it for a program or application, including BOTH all of the smart AND dumb phones that I've ever owned.
Unless you are actually downloading something gprs doesn't use any power. GPRS is not a "stay alive" connection like CSD connection. When the "conection" is idle nothing is being transmitted, not even a "keep alive" polling signal. So just because the indicator says it's connected doesn't mean it's doing anything.
Are you sure yours is actually using battery power, because unless you are actually downloading something it shouldn't be. Anyway this sounds more like an operator branding issue than a generic X1/Wm issue. My sister's "3" K800 always displayed the gprs logo even when she wasn't doing anything. Yet battery use was normal and she didn't get charged any data usage other than what she actually downloaded.
Regarding the Sony Media Panel - okay I hear you, but you have to get over it.
So you can't use the panel - there are heaps of excellent media playing alternatives to choose from without having to use the Media Panel. Infact I would even suggest better options.

@ whybe, maybe I am the problem after seeing my double post, that's some serious joo joo there, and all of the post related to mine after my post...
I guess no one has read any of my other post? I understand AND appreciate the fact that they close (as I stated in past post), though I wish there was a way to actively minimize them. I think we can all agree on some level that the design fundamental and execution of the "panels" is broken and unclear in it's intention, or at the very least not well thought out and executed to it's fullest potential in reality. Why did we wait almost a year (or in some cases, are some of us still waiting) for a phone with all of these problems?.... Here's the long and short of it all, the "Media Experience" panel is broken, period.

@ Max Wedge. I certainly hope my connection is using up the battery power, because at the rate I'm currently going I need to charge the phone twice a day just to get by. Also my phone's Edge connection constantly turns itself on and won't terminate the connection when done. When I then check under the Connection manager to see what connections are active (because I see a little "E" above my network bars) it shows "edge" as enabled which I then have then physically terminate myself. I don't use my X1 too much, and definitely no more than I used to use my N95 through out the day. I am really surprised to see the battery take such a huge hit through out the day with what I consider to be moderate use.
I can't get over the media panel. I just spent about $750 unsubsidized on a phone (that I can't return for something else), about another $100 on accessories for it (a slip case, memory card, car charger, and screen protector), and another $40 for the missing sync in order to be able to use it with my Mac. I refuse to buy another media player when the one advertised with phone should work! I don't want anything special, I just want something functional and finger friendly without have to dig too deep into Winmob... I was under the impression that the "Media Panel Experience" was just this! My bad for taking SE at their word.

Great advice all around, though tbh I haven't really installed too many apps like I mentioned before. I only need a few things on my phone, and most come stock. I've actually owned a few smart phones in my time, just never a Windows Mobile Smartphone btw... I never thought it would be THIS bad. I can't wait to go back to anything Symbian.
About your instructions to download .NET CF 3.5, what do you do if you have a Mac? I also don't have Windows installed on my Mac, either using parallels or Vmfusion just to be clear, so the whole PC route with Active Sync thing is pretty much useless for me. I actually hit the link to .NET CF 3.5 provided on Julien Schapman's download page and opened the link in my phone like the instructions on Microsoft's page said, and well nothing.... I've been reading around online, but mostly on XDA and I think that I may have to alter the registry in order to get it to change? If that's the case forget it!
About your paint peeling, that sucks! So far, thank god (knock on wood) I haven't had any hardware issues. I don't know if I could handle that on top of everything else. Thanks for the help anyways!
