How will it perform in darker conditions. Won't the photos look less sharp than those taken without HDR?

I think, if you are in a dark conditions, you don't need HDR since there is no two different exposures. You need HDR when your scene has two different exposures and I don't think HDR will reduce the sharpness since it just merging three different pictures together unless your hand is shaking while taking the photo which makes your three different pictures slightly different from each other.
