Sony Ericsson weighs manufacturing option in India

NEW DELHI: Cellular handset maker, Sony Ericsson today said that it was evaluating the possibilities of manufacturing in India but its business partners, to whom it has outsourced the production of mobile phones, in this regard will take up any final de cision.

"India is a big market. We are evaluating the manufacturing option but we cannot take any final decision over this, as we outsource most of our manufacturing to business partners like Flextronics and Beijing Mobile Corporation (BMC). We have provided the m information on the Indian market, now it should be their call," Mr Sudhin Mathur, GM, Sony Ericsson India, said here after launching a slew of new cellular phones.

In fact, in case of BMC, which makes handsets for the company, Sony Ericsson itself owns 50 per cent stake and its other manufacturing partners are in Japan, Singapore, Sweden and Malaysia. The company is a 50:50 joint venture between Ericsson of Sweden and Sony of Japan.

"If at all the company sets up a plant here, it will cater to India and also export to others markets," he said.

India's GSM-based cellular phone addition stands at two million a month, a segment in which Sony Ericsson operates.

The world's number one mobile phone maker, Nokia has already announced its plan to manufacture handsets in India and is currently in the process of location finalisation.

LG has already set up a GSM handsets plant in Pune. Motorola has also evinced keen interest in similar plans.

I dont think they would be compromising on quality when manufacturing in india, after all they are all huge companies and products should be manufactured at par with global standards, at least they(MNCs) always claim their plants are operated under close supervision and maintain global standards.
Pushing off low quality products could result in serious consequences anyways...stigma on company's public image, disgruntled users and people ,ay just start getting all their phones from black markets coz then they'll be better quality. Also since phones will be under warranty the recurring repairs will probably cost the company the all the money they saved by selling inferior products.

All you guys burning Cds try "CDBurnerXp Pro 3"...brilliant piece of software...easy to use and wrote 650mb of data on a rewritable disk(operating at max speed of 10x) in 9 min flat!! Best of all its a freeware

@aqua - you have a worm/virus in your system. I think its the Sasser worm or something, Order SP2 online, will take 2-3 weeks for delivery, and its free. Meanwhile to keep your computer from shutting down, goto Start->run and type shutdown -a to abort that annoying countdown

Here's the link for ordering SP2 CD -

http://www.microsoft.com/wind[....]sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

@clank - thanks for the tip, i'll try it out

@gov - they wont compromise on quality, in fact they will get cheaper labour and parts here in India so they will save a lot of money and wont have to forego quality

Hi guy's!!! I'm in goa at this moment, so i couldnt post before. . I believe someone was asking if anybody has been to goa, .

@whiz: that error means that you have a mismanaged memory resource. the memory at that first address overlapped with the other one. I see from your report, that you are using XP v4.51, build 2600 with sp1, try upgrading to sp2, it has better memory handling. Or you could have this error because of an non XP-digitally signed driver, since the XP core is new and indipendent from the shell, it, unlike 98 or ME, has a totally new core. this means that some of the drivers which werent specifically written for it will not be 100% compatable.

@dr_t: Thats good news. If start making phones and stuff in india, maybe prices will further drop. And hey!! Maybe we will be able to get our greasy paws on unreleased phones like the rest of the world  :p
