And wi-fi is also a huge battery drain.
Yes, but not as much as 3G which is evident from the battery life of the iPhone, compared to the battery life of other phones with 3G.
And just because something is designed in a certain way doesn't mean that it is the best way.
Best way for who? No one way is best for everyone. That's why some MP3 players have a screen, some don't - you buy what's best for you.
You can call with one hand but not to mention you can't type messages with one hand.
We don't know that yet. If you can "scroll lists, and so on" with one hand, why wouldn't you be able to type with one hand? And anyway, in what situations would you need to type messages with just one hand? (Don't say whilst driving!)
How is not having a screen convenient? It's the Apple-sheep consumers who bought the shuffle.
So why did Creative bring one out 12 month after the shuffle? If there wasn't a market for it, they wouldn't bother, if all the "Apple-sheep" consumers are buying the shuffle. Every product suits different people at different times. Screenless MP3 players are convenient for when a screen isn't necessary. For instance, when you just want to listen to an hour of random tracks while at the gym, without carrying a heavier HD-based with-screen player.
if this is meant to be so photo focused, shouldn't it have a decent camera?
It's not so photo focussed. So far, virtually nothing has been shown on the Apple site or elsewhere about the photo taking capabilities of the iPhone. No screen shots of the camera UI, no mention of photo editing features, special effects, no sample photos (except in reviews this week). On the Apple site it just says "Camera: 2.0 megapixels" - that's all. The three main features of the iPhone are "Phone, iPod and Internet".
Where you get the idea that the iPhone is so photo focussed I don't know. Just a simple 2MP camera, and a flashy slideshow app (even my 3-year old iPod has a slideshow feature, without a camera.)
(Nokia N95) Yet you say that 3G is not widespread throughout the USA. Another contradiction.
How is that a contradiction? The N95 is available world-wide, in countries where 3G is more widespread too, so it makes sense that Nokia would include it. It also has wi-fi like the iPhone. Currently, the iPhone is US only.
There's no rule that digital cameras should have 2.5 inch screens, but it just happens to be that they all (most of them) do.
A screen on a digital camera is a fundamental necessary feature. FM radio on a digital music player is not. Saying that all digital cameras (or most) have a 2.5" screen is just plain wrong. A quick flick through any camera mag reveals screen sizes anywhere from 1.6" up to 4 inches. A 2.5" screen isn't standard by any means.
I'm not doubting that this phone isn't the perfect phone for you,
I've already stated in this and other threads the iPhone is far from a perfect phone for me. If it is released in Europe without 3G, IM and some other minor things, I definately
won't be getting one. Maybe by v2 or v3 depending on the cost.
Steve Jobs said in the keynote, that the iPhone was the most advanced phone 'ever' to date
In some ways it is, but clearly not in all ways. But surely you know by now that CEOs "big-up" their products like crazy. Steve Jobs is known for his "reality distortion field', but they all do it. Look at the claims Bill Gates made about Vista. You must know to take what these people say with a huge pinch of salt and evaluate the features for yourself when they come out.
- You cannot change simcards.
You can - just not for another network providers SIM as the phone is locked to AT&T. The SIM slot is on the top of the phone and accessed by sticking a paper-clip in a little hole.
See here.
features like camera, 3G etc. which are generally at a benchmark at this price point.
At this price point (cheaper than a Nokia N95 I should point out), what other phones have a high-resolution (160ppi) 3.5in, 320x480 screen, full web browser, 4 or 8 GB memory, and in a 11.6mm thick case?
Yes, it is technically possible for Apple to have matched or even bettered every feature available on every other phone ever made, but they have to draw the line somewhere, otherwise you'd all be complaining that the iPhone cost $3000, the OS was 3GB in size, it had too many buttons, and was too complicated to use.

Youll get a chance to try an iphone in a Cingular show room but i think that other rivals will come up with better improved products . So if i were you i would not buy it so fast.

A lot of you are saying this phone is cheaper then the n95 but technicaly that is not true.
Yes an n95 is about 700 dollars unlocked, probably even less now. But if you wanted an n95 with a 2 year contract you could get it for half of that.
The Iphone is not unlocked you have to get a 2 year contract to get it and its still the same price.

The price of the N95 on a contract is subsidised by the network. It has been widely reported that the price of the iPhone is not subsidised at all by either Apple or AT&T.
So, in theory, if you could by an iPhone unlocked and SIM-free it would be the same price, if Apple and AT&T are telling the truth.
Also, even AT&T employees are not eligible for discounts on the iPhone, giving more credence to the not-subsidised claim.

Subsidised or not you still have to sign a 2 year contract. You have to compare both equally and an n95 with a 2 year contract is cheaper then the Iphone with a 2 year contract.
It is apple that is not letting it be subsidised not the network.

Cheaper to the end consumer, yes. But we were talking about its real cost i.e. what you'd pay to buy one SIM-free or direct off the manufacturer. That's the only way you can accurately compare the cost/feature ratio.
If the iPhone is not subsidised at $500 or $600 then you must assume that its the 'real' cost. Unless of course, Apple also take a cut of the monthly contract fees too. But as the iPhone plans are basically the same as AT&T's standard plans, that seems unlikely unless AT&T are (stupidly) making less money on an iPhone than other models.

Free iPhones for Apple employees
June 28, 2007 - At a town-hall meeting with employees Thursday, Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced that all full-time Apple employees will receive a free 8GB iPhone, while part-time employees who have been with the company for more than a year will also receive a free iPhone.
The phones are expected to be delivered to employees by the end of July, after initial consumer demand has subsided. According to Yahoo! Finance, Apple has 17,787 full-time employees.
This is not the first time Apple has givenfree product to its employees; in early 2005, the company rewarded all employees with a free 1GB iPod shuffle.
Nice!
