Telecom don't give you a SIM card if you're on CDMA but they do for 'world phones' and will for the W-CDMA network... eventually.

Dial 022 for new mobile
4:00AM Monday Feb 02, 2009
By John Drinnan - NZ Herald
NZ Communications has secured the 022 prefix for its mobile customers - but still has not announced a launch date.
The company that is challenging the Vodafone-Telecom duopoly for mobile phones has secured access to the 022 prefix for its customers.
But despite having hired hundreds of staff to establish its new network, it has still not announced its brand name and launch date.
New Zealand Communications regulatory manager Bill McCabe said that rights to the 022 prefix made it easier to draw customers from Telecom and Vodafone. On Friday McCabe insisted it was on track to build its network and take on the incumbents.
But he would not hint at a launch date or brand name for the new 3G phone service, which will aim at lowering New Zealand's notoriously high mobile phone rates.

Yeah the pictures are very nice but it'd the words that are important, especially these ones:
"McCabe acknowledged that any launch this year would coincide with marketing efforts for the established players, as Telecom pushes ahead with the belated launch of its new 3G network scheduled for June.
Vodafone has signalled it will match that marketing."
Finally some cheaper deals are on the way...

Finally! I'm really looking forward to seeing this, and I really hope it includes some cheap deals on data! I'm not worried about the cost of calling and texting cause its pretty cheap if you sort your plan out. Just data costs bother me at the moment.

I've been visiting the VodafoneNZ forum regularly - its a bit like Esato but with grumpy moderators
- well anyway, they let slip that the iPhone 3G on firmware 2.2 is SIM unlocked and able to be used with a Prepay SIM or even the new Telecom GSM SIM card!
Either Vodafone's exclusive deal has run out or they've decided to (very quietly) play nicely with everybody.
@Muhammad Oli
You really should get an iPhone 3G next time round. its become VERY HARD TO IGNORE and with you using a Mac, it'll work even better for you than it does for me.
Yeah, I know the limitations but just get used to taking pics and video with something else.

Sorry mate, as nice as the iPhone's OS is, I can't bring myself to get one because I know I will miss my pxting, video recording, decent camera, and video calling (which I've been using a lot lately). And that's not supposed to be a dig at the iPhone, it just seriously doesn't suit me, and that's fine.
Plus I must consider the fact that the cheapest iPhone 3G is still $979 for the handset only, and I wouldn't even consider paying that kind of price for a phone which doesn't come with everything I use. Plus, even if I was going to get one, I wouldn't get the 8GB anyway, so I'd be forced to pay even more for a 16GB!
I will however be getting a smartphone next time around, but that's partly in anticipation of better data deals on NZ networks. Hopefully they're on their way.
