@dogmann,
Nice read...
@plankgtan,
You keep pretending you're criticising specs and performance, but then you always end up nagging about design and looks...all superficial taste issues?!
Which is it - tech and business strategy, or how cool you look?
Yeah, my n95 is a bit creaky, but not more so than my beloved k750i was. And tech-wise the n95 has so far not given me any probs -
Something I wish I could say about my last 2 SE's - a P and a W...

Many phones have their own design problems/issues, even SE phones.
Remember people complaining about SE joysticks?
Or dusty K850i lenses?
Cracking S600 keypads?
Peeling keypad coating?
And Nokia isn't only focusing on UI and special features. It's also improving its music-centric (Xpress Music - stereo speakers, 3.5 mm jack) and camera-centric (some N-series model) phones.

Lately I've just kept thinking back to the P800, and the feeling I had at the time of owning that, that it really was the pinnacle of mobile phone innovation, technology and design, something that *nobody* else could compete with. Probably a similar feeling to that which Iphone users have now, except without the magnification that all the hype and media have leant to it.
The sad truth is that Sony Ericsson have had NOTHING like that for a few of years now. The P900 and P910 were just lightly polished versions of the exact same phone, the P990 was an unmitigated disaster and outdated even before it began to work properly, and the P1 is just a convenient retread of the same phone again. As a manufacturer, SE seem to have made a concerted effort to abdicate the high ground, and give up any pretence of a lead in smartphone design.
It's sad, and the achingly slow pace of development just seems to be dragging the company further and further down. Forget the Iphone, and forget Nokia - if SE could just repeat their own history and design a new P800 for 2008, they be a lot closer to the right track - but my feeling is we're not going to see it, at least not until it's too late.

I did own K700,k750 and k800 all of them has joystick, I don't have any problem with them. why complain when it works good, there is small marginal of users have that problem..
And yes in Sweden SE phones sells much much better than Nokia.
Maybe we are one of them prefer Design before future.

@Dogmann, great comments as per usual and as you say, the facts about the K850i issues speak for themselves & "cheap marketing is no replacement for quality and innovation." 110% agree. Sony rely too much on their strong brand image to gloss over their sometimes 2nd rate products with a fancy 'gimic' ('bestpic' springs to mind)
@strecker, well put and very valid comments "Which is it - tech and business strategy, or how cool you look?"
@Boinng. in just a few paragraphs you've summed it up perfectly why the subject heading in this post so true!
To everyone else out there moaning about SE or disappointed about their recent phones specs/performance/bugs etc etc.........but there are other mobile phone manufacturers out there!
Quoting my own post
"Well I guess what i'm trying to say is "shop around", don't neglect a Nokia phone that may tick all your needs purely because its a Nokia & end up with an inferior SE model purely cause its "SE" (or vice versa).
At the end of the day you're only screwing yourself over."

Just gone N95 too after 4 crappy K850's
DAMN !!! Is it an amazing piece of kit.
N95 8GB only on Vodafone over here so have the N95. Its got the latest firmware so is far speedier than the 'old' N95.
Wanted an N82 but CPW (who have been damn good customer service wise with the K850 exchanges) could not extend the exchange past 15 days... mind you they were going outside their normal procedure as I'd had so many issues.
Orange refused to exchange the phone at all, saying I had to have another K850 and suffer any issues... 3 months and I'm off to another provider if they carry on like that with customers paying £200 per month bills !!
Oh well... now I have an device I simply cannot put down as it does so much ! The K850 does exactly the same as the K800, K810 etc just it had a 5MP camera... so quite boring after a few hours use.

@ joemax
I can't keep my fingers off of my N95 8GB since getting it! It really is a little modern marvel huh? I really can't fathom why I didn't make the jump to Nokia earlier. I don't see myself getting bored with this thing any time soon! Just wait until Nokia releases their N-gage and Ovi platforms globally! N-Gage really sounds exciting, and from what I understand it should be like a paired down X-box Live experience, but for Nokia mobiles! Did you or Dogmann know that Nokia just released a firmware update yesterday for the N95 8GB btw?... I really want to download it, however there doesn't seem to be any support for software updates via a Mac...

I guess in addition to SE designs, I'll also really really really be missing OTA software downloads.... Why nokia? Why? I thought it was supposed to be what "computers have become"?... Since when do I need to connect one computer to another, in order to update the software? Oh well, it's still a damn fine phone! Who knows, maybe we'll get the ability to do OTA firmware downloads in a future firmware update, providing I can update my software to begin with?

@ Boris
Maybe Vodafone removed the OTA FW update, ive got a non-branded N80 and it has OTA FW update in Device Manager (Dev. Mgr.)
