well this question is a general one to all the network ppl so any1 can answer
i have recently arrived in the UK ( well nt recently ) but a year ago and currently im using a o2 pre pay. Im sure to get a contract they check your credit or something. Is 1 yr sufficient for you to get a contract based service frm any provider. I dnt have a UK credit card but i do have a bank account
thanx in advance
You should be fine as long as the sales person is "Creative" with your time in the country. Worst case scenario you would pay a deposit, but I know I could pass you.

It really depends on your credit history. Some networks will decline your for a contract and some will offer you a contract with a deposit normally £100 which you get back after around six clear payments.
Best way it to take your bank details and proof of I.D into your network of choice and get them to run a credit check.

Ok go to an Orange shop and buy a 3G sim as it sounds as if its not 3G. Just get Orange to transfer your number onto the new sim. I know someone who had similar problem on Orange a while ago and thats what he did.
Forgot about this thread LOL. Anyway, I went into the Orange shop and got a new PAYG 3G Sim and hey presto, instant 3G signal! Thanks Guy's.

Most networks, in order to pass you clearly, would need at least 3 years history.
I prefer to NOT risk my job over a credit check unlike JiSm, and I suspect most other phone salesman would not want to either. In otherwords, I wouldn't fake a customers time in the country.
Also, most decent credit check systems will realise you're lying and refer or decline it altogether.

Yeah, incase you hadn't noticed, we're not in the USA.....
Anyway, 3 years is ample history if you ask me. It makes sense, it's an investment and they want to make sure they're going to get their money back from you. If you've only been here a year or so, doesn't show enough commitment to you hanging around long enough to pay the rest of the contract.
Anyway, like it or leave it really, you can't argue with their decision once it's made, kicking up a fuss will just make things worse.

My job would only be risked if the person i was "Creative" with did not play along. That time in the country thing is crap anyways. If you have a tiny ounce of good credit history and show the stability of time in the country (3 years they like) then it is usually all good.

If not, then they might ask for a deposit. Sure, the networks dont like our creativity, but I can tell you, half of the revenue the companies make is from these "Creative" applications. At the end of the day, if your credits good, you should be allowed a pay monthly phone. Time in the country is a variable we can manipulate for a favourable outcome for all. Contract anyone?

Couple of things:
1) Clearly contract sales are more ruthless in London, cause out here in the rest of the country, I'd rather not risk my manager seeing or hearing, or another member of staff for that matter, that I'm being fradulant.
2) The networks set up these credit check systems to benefit THEMSELVES, noone else, so if that was the case they'd just let anyone have them, 3 years or 3 weeks.
