fair enough, though I was under the impression N95 updates had stopped after 12-18months or so. I'm sure I could be wrong about it.
I know though that the N70 wasn't update much beyond a year, and the software was still inclined to be unstable.
I think it's a complete myth that SE are worse than other OEM's at continued updates of their phones. Most OEM's, SE included, stop releasing firmware updates once the software is judged stable. They'll only update to a new version of the OS if it's deemed necessary to fix stability or operational issues.
Atleast that's the way it's always seemed to me. I know P990 was seen as a problem by many, but most P990 owners are happy enough with the final firmware version, even if it could have been refined a bit more. But the main stability issues were addressed.
It was the early problems with the P990 and SE's slackness at addressing the problems within the first 3-6 months that caused the most grief - not the fact that firmware updates stopped after 12 months.

actually, HTC is offering such updates...
You can update some older devices to wm6 or 6.1

But rarely a full version, for example WM5 to WM6...
There is very little difference between 6 and 6.1 (though there are some advantages in 6.1)

One thing i noticed from nokia firmware is that they sometimes include pretty major features in them. The N81 in its latest firmware has flash lite and feature pack 2 transitions, both which were not initially available in the N81

Yep NOKIA even recently released a new V30 FW for the N95 Classic, the N73 also got two updates earlier this year.
QVGA
True. NOKIA N81, N82, E90, N95 Classic, and N95-8GB got
On-Demand Paging
Flashlite3.0
And FP2 Menu Transitions (for N81) and some other FP2 features.
All of them are stable but still getting updates and new features.

Sorry...it was not like that...had SE done the same that nokia did with the N95 Classic (backporting demand paging), and the P990/M600/W950 user experience would improve ALOT. But they stopped before that. And its known that hipotesys was on the table at a given time, but they prefered to launch the P1 with double RAM instead, and ask the P990 users to shut up!
Mind you, the case of M600 was even worse, because it lacked the final update that P990 had, that removed some rather stupid bugs.
Then there´s the fact that nokia keeps adding functionality to its top of the line smartphones via firmware updates (not just minor corrections), and SE did nothing - see the case of the P1 - all the big changes were made by users via hacking (sound volume, flash, icon replacement, alarm sounds, video and photo quality, sound quality, torch app, notes, app, etc etc) or thanks to Opera (opera 9.5)
This is why UIQ died!!! SE is pathetic regarding user support!!!

Demand paging has always been a part of the N95-8GB. It's the mSD-equipped N95 that got this feature through an update at the time of the N95-2's release. I also highly doubt if the N82 ever needed a f/w update to get demand paging.

To be honest, I'm glad it did, as otherwise some or many UIQ fans would never find the motivation to open their eyes and to go for another brand & platform.
Only a few of us did when the P990 fiasco happened.
Others (including me) gave SE another chance and went for the P1i (just as SE's expected from P990 users) or the W960.
Some of us moved further to the G700/G900.
And if SE were to launch another UIQ3 device, I'm sure that a lot of us couldn't wait to get it and then the next and the next and so forth, despite a non-existent product support (and probably still outdated specs).
And that's why this is imo actually good news for SE/UIQ junkies, since they will now have the chance to find much better 'stuff' elsewhere.
