Yes they possibly are. Lets face it anything past 5mp and pictures look high resolution. Often my Satio has taken a picture worse than my N95 8gb from 2008.
When i got my Satio i was trying to spot a great difference in quality from my N95, its much harder to do so than back when phones only took 1mp images.
I think we've all just grown used to seeing high quality images now from any phone, even those with strange colour rendering like the Galaxy S. So, when we see pictures like those from the N8, we're not as impressed as we used to be. Its understandable. Having said that however, i spent all day yesterday at a wedding. I took my Satio and a 7 year old Sony Cybershot digital camera, which is 3.2mp. The Satio beat it hands down on resolution (obviously!), true-to-life colour reproduction, sharpness, red eye reduction and flash. The only area the Cybershot won was its optical zoom and the odd less blurry picture every now and then when i didnt hold the Satio still for long enough.

good explanation etaab.. and i agree.
Also doesn't look like its too many manual control settings.
For ISO control there is only low, medium and high. They correspond to 100, 400 and 800 ISO levels.
I may still get the N8, as the 720P video will be MUCH BETTER than what my C905 can currently do.. there is no doubt there, as video is pretty bad on it.

You know what however ? ive posted pictures on this forum and many others since 2005 when i got my K750i and every phone since then including my Satio and have always had good feedback from fellow forum dwellers
but not once have i ever on anything ever manually adjusted the ISO setting on any phone. I always let the phone / camera choose.
So if the N8 lacks an option to manually choose which ISO setting to use, i wont be bothered diddly squat !

yea, that is true also.. but I have been using Witchking's CBE driver for a while now. I think I am spoiled by it.
So many manual settings and new features, it will be very hard to part with that level of manual control.
But I guess if the camera is that good you shouldn't need to make too many manual changes for just regular point and shooting.

I dont doubt you'll miss the extras you get with a hacked phone or modified software, but whats to say the N8 wont take better pictures out of the box than your old phone, OR if not, get someone who might modify the camera software also ?
Personally im not really into hacking phones or modifying their software which has not been authorised by the phones manufacturer.
Lastly, when comparing my phone(s) to those with modified camera software over the years, i could never really tell that much of a quality difference.

Not many SE phones have offered adjusting of ISO...

Not you but Nokia seem to be pushing very hard on the photo qualities of the N8 so quite a few people would be buying it to use it as a basic camera and those would want the typical options available on a digicam. Unfortunately, low light shooting does not seem to be possible since it doesn't allow slower shutter speeds. At least not in the piece used to shoot the samples posted and I hope this changes before the phone is released.

Whats your point ? you're basically saying not many phones offer the user the ability to change the ISO setting, but then saying people will expect the N8 to offer the setting, even though usually its missing.
Why should they ? why should the N8 be any different from the majority of cameraphones ?
I find this every single time a new cameraphone with a high spec hyped up camera is about to be released, people bang on about what they expect from the camera, but then forget at its foundation the device in question is a mobile phone. If you're into photography, a dedicated standalone high quality digital SLR camera would more suit your needs.
Remember all of you in this thread that in essence, the N8 is still only a Symbian mobile phone made by Nokia. Nokia maybe attempting to make it the best camera-specification phone yes, but its still a mobile phone. You cannot blame it for not being perfect, its like saying the N8 might be good but it does not toast your bread as good as your toaster in the mornings.

jake20 plz dont compare satio to a MODIFIED c905... And you forget 1 other importan thing: The N8 will be full metal.. Long time since i hold a metal SE in my hand.. in fact, i only had the T610 (half metal). You cant compare plastic to metal. And the 720p video beats the crap out of the C905. HDMI out, microUSB standard, and multitouch... what more do you want? and i bet in a couple of months the software will be hacked (it's a nokia...) and heavy modding will come.

Again something i notice prior to a new phones release is the anticipation is always followed by doubts. From page 1 of this very thread we see:

hi etaab,
thanks for the advice.. i am really dying for this phone now. I seriously doubt that any Sony Ericsson will be able to match the camera specs and offline GPS features of the N8.. that is primarily why i want it so bad.
@ jake20 - remember why you wanted this phone in the first place. Its very easy when a new phone is hyped up prior to its release for people like you and me to analyse the phone for a potential weakness. Then, after analysing the phone over and over again we realise after our initial excitement the phone is not perfect or does not have every feature out there.
Forget all that, just remember the key points, even norbi_nw hit the nail on the head without realising it, the phone has other great aspects about it which are much more desirable. For me the N8's main appeals are:
- Metallic body
- New version of Symbian (my favourite mobile OS over Android or Apple)
- High spec camera
- Nokia - a better manufacturer of phones
- Ovi maps (free !!)
- Ovi store
- On screen widgets
- 3.5mm jack (better than SE's fastport)
- HDMI out
- 720p video recording
in stereo !
Remember, forget your modified camera software from third parties, straight from the box the N8 should have a better camera than any phone before it - even
Steve Litchfield over at the Phones Show agrees - see this link. [ This Message was edited by: etaab on 2010-09-18 20:14 ]
