So Simion_levi...do you think it's a better idea to get it on orange and pay out the 12months than to get it SIM free? i mean if it still is cheaper for me to get a contract...i might look into that. I just would hate having two lines. I don't have a contract with Orange to begin with.

@Zoidy: Can i just point out that mine is a different case to most people buying on a new contract because i was upgrading and just stayed on the same tariff i've been on for a while. The upgrade price is FIXED irrespective of what tariff you happen to be on, and that price is 300 quid at CPW. This will definitely be cheaper for me over a year than the sim free price of 500 quid, plus all the benefits Simion has pointed out such as the insurance (orange care is included on the HSD plan) which i consider VERY important on a handset like this.

That is: phone at either £200 or £300 on high/low tariff, then changing tariff immediately to HSD = 12months x £10 = £120 plus unlock fee of £20 from Orange (or £30 elsewhere).
Could i just say that this is an extreme example of downgrading tariff - you would need the change to be implemented BEFORE your first billing date occurs which could be just a few days after you buy the phone, yet you need your account to be set up on their computers, giving you a very small window to get this right. It's more probable you will end up paying the full whack for the first month and then 11 months at 10 quid. Also you need to buy it somewhere where clawback is not a problem, which is pretty much only the orange shop.

the cheapest way to get the p800 is on t-mobile!
you pay £270 for the handset
then pay £15 a month for 12 months = £180
so £270 + £180 = £450

@butterguy - yup, what really swung it for me was the included insurance on the right tariffs (as onionz says, HSD tariff has Orange care included). True, i also managed to pay about £80 less overall than the SIM free price, which is always good, and could've paid £180 less if i'd not been conned slightly by the guy in the Orange shop, but there is no way i can carry a P800 around all day knowing that if it got snatched or broken, there'd be no replacement forthcoming. With Orange care, i've got that cover - and they are probably the best mobile cover available, 24hour handset replacement, cover for theft, loss, accidental damage etc and are very good with claims - i bought my 7650 last year through Orange for the same reason.
@onionz - yup, this is what i did - changed tariffs an hour after getting home - i.e. just a few hours after i'd bought the damn thing! Point was, Orange ask you when you want to be billed - i didn't really think about it, so just said end of the month (28th of each month). Luckily it was the 21st that i bought it - so when changing tariffs, i was told (and they were right, since i've now got my bill!) that i'd be charged a 1 week proportion of my original tariff, then be on the HSD from then on. So make your billing date a few days after the purchase date, and it's very easy! Oh, and definitely agree on the need to buy from Orange retail shops - that's why i said above about it being pointless getting a P800 on O contract from CPW, if you are intending to do this.

They are probably saying that because, while they can't clawback you, the staff member that serves you may still lose some commission - so asking them "can i buy a phone on a £50 per month tariff to get it really cheap, then immediately change to a £10 per month tariff" isn't the best way to word it. Whenever i asked that question, it was more 'if i buy a phone on a £30tariff, if i then decide i'll be using it for more data calls than for voice, can i change tariffs immediately, or do i have to wait?'
Which shop is this, btw? I suggest you actually phone Orange C/S, and have them tell you the truth - that there's no clawback, unless you buy from an independant dealer. I changed within hours, just had my first bill and no problems there - i got charged 6days of my original tariff, then its HSD all the way without a murmor of complaint from them!

The HSD tariff i'm on isn't really of interest to you if you actually want to use it - basically it's just the cheapest tariff available, has NOTHING inclusive, but DOES include orange care for free (i.e. comprehensive insurance) for the £10 per month inc. vat.

That's all the tariff info - cheap text messages BTW @7p each, but most people don't use it as i've said - it's more useful as a cheap holding tariff, to get a new, insured phone to use on another Orange/other network SIM.
