Globe bows to consumer
pressure, unblocks WAP sites

INQ7.net

LOCAL carrier Globe Telecom has bowed to consumer pressure as it silently "unblocked" access to some wireless application protocol (WAP) sites outside of the company's "myGlobe" portal, INQ7.net learned on Thursday.

In an interview, a Globe spokesperson confirmed that the operator has unblocked access to some WAP sites, such as Yahoo! and INQ7.net, as well as other sites as part of "rationalization efforts" of the carrier's network.

Jones Campos, Globe Telecom assistant vice president for public relations, reiterated that the company is doing its best to address customer needs, saying that it is "doing its best to address the problem."

"As we've said, we're in a transition phase. We're trying to rationalize everything. We're not really shutting out information to consumers. We would like to be as truthful as possible to them," Campos said.

On August 29, Globe started limiting access to some WAP sites due to "network congestion." This prompted the carrier to institutionalize subscriber access block to WAP sites outside MyGlobe. The decision came after months of deliberations, Campos said.

Prior to this development, Globe subscribers were given free and unlimited access to mobile WAP sites up until midnight of August 29, 2003.

The executive said that the carrier aimed to solve the problem by next week.

"Gradually, we're opening access to some WAP sites. We're starting with Yahoo!," he added.

As a result of the access block on other WAP sites, online information and service resources such as Google, ESPN, and even WAP e-mail via Hotmail can no longer be used by Globe subscribers. Instead, Globe subscribers can only use WAP services on MyGlobe such as ring tones, wallpapers and logos.

WAP is a communications protocol that allows people to browse stripped-down or "text-versions" of websites through a mobile phone.

Since Globe launched its General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) network in 2001, WAP browsing has become an experience more similar to regular Internet browsing. WAP can also be accessed through the slower and more expensive GSM network.

Globe has been offering WAP browsing using the GPRS network for free to both pre- and post-paid subscribers of Globe since last year.

In a previous interview, Campos hinted that Globe might start charging subscribers for using the service soon.
