they usually like to tell you 5hours or some bs time
to make sure they have enough 'rest' inbetween jobs lol
j/k i am sure ppl at SE service centres work very hard
the actual time to do the 'upgrading' is only 5min
i did this when upgraded to R1L, i forgot to give them my phone lock pin, and i didn't have another contact number (phone was with them duh... ) and when i returned 5 hours later like they asked they told me needed the phone lock pin, i apologised and gave it to them, phone came on, upgraded and was in my hands within 5 min
cheers!
gonna do R3C soon

@agnesx:
When doing software upgrade, one does not need neither your SIM PIN nor your phone lock code. They can load the new software revision and then enter the system menu to check if it is all fine. You don't need a sim-card to enter this menu and I doubt that I would ever give my personal codes to anyone.

p.s. May be they tried another SIM card on your phone? Why is this? Another thing is that they wanted to be sure that everything is fine after the upgrade, but on the other hand they can check almost *everything* in the system menu and they can also dial 911 or 112 to check if the phone is dialing-out.

@dean
You can't call an emerency number just to check if the phone is dialing out!
...or you can, but you most definetly should not, so I doubt they would use it for testing...
@agnesx
They don't need your phone lock code. I have a phone lock code on mine. They have never asked for it, I have never given it to them. They don't insert a SIM card while upgrading either....

I use my voicemail number if I am checking the quality of my signal, not that I do that very often!

Yes, you're right. That was a bad example. It is because in Bulgaria none of these 2 numbers work, I wrote them before thinking. Sorry. And what kind of emergency number is "08"?

Correct me if I am wrong, but I am pretty sure a full firmware flash takes about ~30 minutes (give or take a few). They have to pump in a few megs over serial port you know...

I remember that the full update from T68 to T68i took few hours (it is about 10-13MB and I guess it is normal)... When changing from R1A to R1L for T610 it took less than 15mins I think. I will go today to change my sw to R3C and will use my stopwatch

I'm not sure how big in MB is the firmware part (cpu+modem).

Here in Lausanne, Switzerland, you need to leave your phone for 24 hours!!!!
I've never left my phone for an upgrade because of that.
