They haven't strictly.
Mine does show up but not all the time! It is very strange.
There seems to be no reason why one time the name will show up and the next time it won't.
Weird!

Could just be a bug because there is no reason why they'd remove it

why is knowing who a sms is from before you open it such an essential feature for you?????
Also the phone book and messages and orange world icons on the stand by screen are theese a unique feature for us i dont think i have seen it on a standard k700

its not an essential feature, essential is such a strong word. It's all these little things that when put together make the new SE phones the best on the market. Maybe I am silly but I think it is a lovely touch to have the photo of your friend/ girlfriend come up when you receive a text. It's the attention to detail that makes these phones great. By removing this feature and the shorcuts Orange have made an incredible phone just great. I don't need the 3 extra icons on the screen. It's messy and fiddly. The joystick shortcuts are greatly missed by me.

I asked in the Carphone Warehouse today about fw updates for my orange k700... All they could say was that it was a brand new phone... Why would it need updates??
I really couldn't be bothered...
Anyone got any news on our firmware updates yet?

I recently got a K700i on Orange. These are the problems I'm getting with their customisations:
1) It says in the manual to move the joystick left to write a new message. This doesn't work. So instead I need to:
Click up or down to get to their desktop 'shortcuts'
Click down to select 'messages'
Click to select 'write new'
Click to select 'text message'.
So, 4 clicks instead of 1, for one of the most common actions. Tedious.
2) Similarly up and down doesn't take you to the address book, just their desktop 'shortcuts'. So double the number of clicks there too.
3) When I get a new text message i don't see a screen saying who it is from, but the desktop shortcut says 'one new message'.
So again, have to click up or down to go to the desktop shortcuts, then down to get to messages, then click to read. Instead of one click to read as it should be.
And the shortcuts are disabled so I can't configure, say, right to get to the calendar, have to go through the menu structure which is tedious.
It is all 'little' things, but the actions are so common that doing 4x the key presses makes for very poor usability.
These desktop shortcuts are the root of the problem - they are actually redundent if it worked as it should - i.e the three they give you - address book (should work from up or down on the joystick) - messages (should work from left on the joystick) - orange world (there is a button for it on the side of the phone!!). So they just get in the way, cause more clicks for common actions, and don't actually speed anything up if the phone worked as it should.
Orange need to sort this out, they have totally messed up the UI.

yeah id pretty much agree withyou that they've mess-up the UI, which is a massive shame because this should be a very, very good phone. instead all us orange users get a very good phone (its better the a vodafone version i played with). If they could update it with the shortcuts option availiable and get rid of the f*cking annoying desktop icons i would be a very happy person and im sure other orange k700 users would be too!

I think I've figured it out, it's when your phone receives a message that makes the message box full, the picture will appear instead of the awful "New message: 1" thing.

i've been in touch with both se and orange over this user interface debacle. apparently, orange is trying to standardise the user interfaces of its 'signature line' phones so that customers do not have to stick with an se/nokia/motorola just because they are familiar with the way that one brand works.
evidently, this means they have to 'downgrade' the features of some phones so that they suit the corporate profile of what orange designers think makes a 'good' phone. either that, or they have to downgrade it so that it matches less advanced handsets.
anyways, orange refuse to update the firmware and se can't help either. as a result, i have cancelled my subscription, returned the phone and will probably get a non-bastardised k700 on o2. despite being with orange for five years, i find its new policy of screwing around with user interfaces totally unacceptable if it reduces functionality - it just doesn't make any sense.

Do we think we will be able at some point, somewhere, be able to re-flash orange phones to the standard software?
