I really can't understand where this Battle of Britain caper comes from! Mind you, I would like to think that I would have given a good account of myself on Eagle Day and taken a few Huns down over the Channel before getting whammied on gin at Mrs Miggins' afterwards, with the other chaps, all cheering the King's good health and victory over the bally Bosch.
That's the sort of caper one can tell over a dinner table, leaving out the gory parts until the ladies have retired, of course, then the chaps can hear about one's exploits and one can here what sort of damned fine heroics they got up to. I'm sure there would be some tales to tell; jolly dangerous scrums with the Bosch that only the likes of Winnie and Monty and chaps with second names for firsts could sort out, inspiring the lads to run forward and give the enemy a damned good licking, with the jesses sitting it out on the touchline.
We need more of that sort now you know good old fashioned bravery with just a touch of insanity, that's what sees us through the day. Then of course all the hijinks and capers can be recounted, songs can be sung, knees can be slapped, blazers with brass buttons can be worn, pipes can be smoked, cigars clipped, brandy swilled, eggs fried, open top sports cars driven in the rain with just the usual comment to the pretty lady in the passenger seat of, "Bracing weather, isn't it darling?", croquet played, and a dashed smart time can be had by all. Huzzah!
