Sorry, i beg to differ. How can it be a trend setter? Ppl are already using phones as mp3 players on the move, and these, phones are doing a good job. Particularily the p910. With a fat mem stick, it really can do the job. And these new phones are pathetic. It has only around 700mb of memory! What use is it when it comes against 2gb sticks? I can see 5gb mem sticks in not too distant future. The only thing it can have is a better player with hardware and dedicated buttons. The present p910 does a decent job This message was posted from a K500

@goviv:

If you read the press release carefully, you wil notice that there are going to be dedicated audio processors built into the chipset for the phones being released this year. The phones will use the Nexperia chipset from Philips...remember that post?

Anyway, the audio/video processing is going to get a major boost from these new cipsets so i think its a step in the right direction. I don't think that these phones will be a flop, i tink they will sell rather fast, judging from the success of the walkman and its hardware.

See hyper.... It is a very bad move to concentrate solely on a market dominated by very big players. It will get stiff competition from ipod and its own players. Compared to these, even with the latest av chipset is not a step in the right dir'n. These chipsets will only help SE in future releases of its phones which support 3g. For now ppl will be satisfied with a proper mp3 player (which is a very dominant market) and for the rest, a pda phone with mp3 player will solve it. It will help SE in the long run This message was posted from a K500

But thats the point. Right now there are not many low/medium end models with decent mp3 capabilities. The development and collaboration of the "walkman" project will enable to bring to market a uniqe product yet again to adress the very point we are discussing.

This time i am sure they will pack a punch especially with the new memory stick / built in memory capacities. Nobody is denying the fact that an iPod will be a better solution, infact a dedicated(stand alone) mp3 player is the best device for mp3's. If you are an audiophile you will understand what i mean by that.

BUT...this is a multifuntion device...and like in any multifunciton device there will always be compromises...and you can't please all consumers out there...therefore the segmented approach to consumer electronics. I admit its a vicious circle!

@hyper, i understand your view point. It is a compromise, but i'm only telling that, these cheap s60 devices with mem capabilities will be a better option than the walky series. Or like wise, the p910 will be a good option. Than these. I really hope, SE doesnt solely concentrate on this. This message was posted from a K500

In the history of advertising, there is nothing that can beat the walkman. The work of the creative heads then, even now make a very big impact. These things are actually called personal stereo players and only a sony's personal stereo is called a walkman. The success of the ad is so huge, even any of the personal stereo players are now called walkman(be it any brand) This message was posted from a K500

By the time these new handsets are released the prices would have dropped significantly on the Pxxx series and that would make it accessible to the masses.
However, new technology will always attract more attention...so who knows whats in store. It does not mean that will ditch everything else in a good quality phone, i think they are just being innovative and kick starting the race to get the most out of one device.

They did it with camphones...now they are going to do it with Walkman phones...so u will have a Walkman camphone! So lets just see how they convey this concept across.
