I think the P1i has very good sound.

Does anyone else agree with this and would you consider the sound quality good enough to use as a primary music player?

its true that atrac started in mini discs but it has come along way since then with many improvements and is generally accepted as one of the better compression techniques. Also as identical sound quality can be achieved (compared to MP3) at half (or less as Sony claim) the bit rates it requires less processing power and so therefore provides longer battery life in portable devices

probably the only reason most people use MP3 is that it is virtually an open source compression whereas Sony licence the atrac compression adding more cost to such devices, but its used in all their walkmans etc

As i primary music player, i would not say so no as there are much better music players out there. It might Be good as a music player, with a decent pair of headphones. U might as well get an ipod shuffle.

The speaker is very good i must say that, was using it this weekend on the beach. Could be heard clearly over the screams of children and waves.

@masseur, i do remember. But i guess it takes the hassle out of having to convert all of my music from lossless to atrac3. I think my main problem was that i switch between soo many different devices keeing "trac" of everything was not always that easy or quick.

Oh yes do you have a 3.5mm jack for your P1 or do you use a dedicated mp3 player.

Thanks masseur,

i used to use my PSP as a music player whilst i was between the P910 and P990. using Atrac and sonicstange (The worst music software since WMP).

but it's true the average conversation rate is about:

-"Mp3 3mb" to "Atrac3+ 1.6mb".-

and saving the battery life is true too. as with Atrac the device only has to access the MS once per track, rather than accessing it intermittently throughout with MP3. reducing processing power and therefore saving battery life

It really saved alot of space on my 2gb ms nearly doubling the amount of tracks i could save and absolutely no loss of quality .

And with SS as crap as it is music conversation is done "on the fly" so no need to convert your entire library before hand.

I do have a 3.5mm jack and use decent noise canceling headphones, the main issues are space and battery life.

Pros: More MS Space, longer Battery Life and no compromise for quality.

Cons: Can't Share Music with your friends (legally of course). and having to use SonicStage

for SE to supply us with these codecs the cost is minimal to them as its Sony Software and it'll be very easy to implement so theres no excuse. and of course if you don't like Atrac, you just don't use it .

as you can probably tell this is my main grip with all P-Series (well not walkman) SE Phones. we paid good money to get a Top-end phone why cant it have every thing, and definitely give N95 a run for it's money Music wise

The shortcut keys for the the N95 work well and the music player is very good.

I dont know why we cant choose which media player we can use... for example use the walkman media player. but i guess its taken long enough to get this far so i wont pressure the techies at SE.

But music reproduction from a mobile never has impressed me.

you're right its not amazing but with decent headphones i still think it's very enjoyable, plus it's one less device to carry around.

Hmmm, I went to the sonyericsson.com website and saw that a number of different programs were offered for free (fun & downloads -> software) such as handyday, navigon, and some more...

But I can't seem to download them, the download instructions also lead to the same result. There simply is no option of saving the file. There are some themes which CAN be saved but why put the software there as 'free' and not allow you to actually get it.

Anyone else already tried downloading one of those apps?
